- Silicon Motion SM 8466 SSD Data Infrastructure brings enterprise grade speed and security in the future
- Up to 512TB this controller produces heavy work loads from yesterday’s storage
- Designed for the scale, not your setup, this SSD will probably remain in the server room
Silicon Motion’s new SM8466 SSD controller makes a strong case for next -generation storage supply.
Made using the 4NM process of TSMC, the controller is an engineer for performance -filled environment and claims to double them through PCI 5.0 devices.
But although its specifications may be suitable for the fastest SSD in enterprise settings, its practical compatibility with users’ desktops is objectionable, at least for now.

Performance data promise a jump, but for whom?
Silicon Motion claims that SM 8466 can target the 28GB per second peak sequencing speed, which is double the PCI 5.0 solutions.
Such performance can be ideal for real -time analytics, large -scale database operations, and high definition media processing, but for most consumers, such abilities are far more than everyday needs.
7 million random IOPs (input/output operations) to read and write recommend this for virtualized environment and high load scenarios where delays should be reduced and retaliated hours should be kept permanent.
Whether it is eligible as the best SSD, especially in view of the limited compatibility with the mainstream PC.
From a system design point of view, the controller for the sound of 512TB Nand promising for hypertensive storage applications.
However, in the scope of storage, this jump is not ready to renew the consumer market.
Even the largest HDD options currently available for desktop use are not currently available, and such ability to integrate with the same PCIE SSD will be outside the cost of prevention and thermal challenging data centers.
Beyond the raw performance, SM8466 includes a sweet of the features developed by the entrepreneurship.
It supports secure booting, AES-256 encryption, and TCG Opel compliance, which aims to meet the latest data protection requirements.
Its smart monitoring system adds an additional layer of diagnosis and initial failure detection, but these features are more useful than domestic veins in the server rack.
Physically, the SCA interface stabilizes strength, data and administration in the same connector, smooth the installation, and minimize the complexity of the caeling.
Virtualization technologies such as SROV and MPF Controller allow multiple virtual storage functions, and further strengthens their appeal to cloud service providers rather than average users.
The advantages of SM8466 are largely clear, high demand environment, but the average user is unlikely to experience these benefits before the end of this decade.
