    • According to US Director National Intelligence, the UK has agreed to quit its application for the backdoor of encryption in Apple’s iCloud.
    • The option to weaken encryption, however, remains in the UK law under the Investigation Powers Act
    • Apple killed the encryption feature from the end of the Eye Cloud in the UK in February, and then challenged this order in court

The UK has agreed to return to Apple’s application to make an encryption backdoor in Apple’s iCloud system.

The US Director of the National Intelligence, Tulsi Gibard, confirmed the UK’s U -turn on Monday, August 18, 2025, adding that such a backdoor “enabled US citizens’ secure -secured data access and enable our civil liberties.”

Welcoming the decision, digital rights experts are not ready to call it a victory. UK law has the authority to weaken encryption, which has been given amendment calls.

apple In February, in the UK killed the encryption feature from the end of its iCloud to the end when it came under the Technical Capacity Notice (TCN) under its Instead of making a requested backdoor, the 2016 Investigation Powers Act. Big Tech Dev has challenged the petition in court since April.

US officials, including Vice President JD Venice, have allegedly strongly opposed the British order, warning against “systematic dangers” that could be created such a backdoor.

Although not a default feature, once it is enabled, Apple’s Advanced Data Protection (ADP) provides an additional layer of protection in all iCloud steward data using the encryption technology, meaning that even Apple cannot access files. This is an additional protection move that British have been unable to use for months.

A UK government spokesman told Reuters that the two countries have worked together to tackle security threats and ensure that citizens’ privacy is protected.

Apple has not yet shared further details of how and when the UK users have been developed to regenerate the ADP.

    “A happy step”

The US officials were far from the only party concerned about the negative effects that could have the privacy and security of the backdoor in Apple’s advanced encryption.

More than 100 Internet leaders, academics, organizations, and companies Authorities picked up the alarm just days after issuing an encryption backdoor order.

Encryption is a technology that is responsible for preventing unauthorized access to user data. Specifically, the best VPN and safe messaging apps use the online communication sender and the recipient to ensure the privately staying private. A level of protection that is becoming increasingly important as a large cyberrtex such as the salt typhoon attacks.

That is why digital rights groups have welcomed the UK’s decision to back up Apple’s encryption backdoor request.

🚨 The Home Office has allegedly agreed to quit its demand that Apple allows the government to spy on encrypted messages. This is a welcome step to protect the privacy of millions of users in the UK. “We repeat our call to leave our call at home office… pic.twitter.com/5sre83zhfvAugust 19, 2025

In a post on X, Rebecca Vincent, the interim director of the Big Brother Watch, said: “This is a welcome move to protect the privacy of millions of consumers in the UK.”

He said, the option of issuing a backdoor order for similar encryption is still a possibility in the UK law under the Investigation Powers Act.

That is why according to experts, an amendment to these powers is the same as it should come forward.

Vincent once again argued, “We repeat our demands to abandon the use of technical capacity notices (TCN), who try to break the encryption, which represents a serious threat to our ability to communicate privately,” said Vincent, who has a serious threat to our ability to communicate privately, “said Vincent. It should be modified for protection. “
