X (then Twitter) launched encrypted DMS in mid-2023—now the company is expanding that functionality and launching it as a full-fledged chat application.
The app is simply called “Chat” and sells itself on privacy—it promises end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for chats and file sharing, disappearing messages, a feature that prevents screenshots. You can edit and delete sent messages. X added “No ads. No tracking. Total privacy.”

X’s new chat app
It is a full-featured messenger with voice and video calling support. A voice memo feature is also in the works, allowing users to send pre-recorded voice messages.
The protection isn’t perfect, though—the note on the Encrypted Direct Messages help page notes: “Currently, we do not offer protections against man-in-the-middle attacks. As a result, if a malicious insider or X itself were to compromise a confidential conversation as a result of a mandatory legal process, neither the sender nor the recipient would know.”
This is a critical issue for E2EE apps. X claims it is working on a new mechanism that should make “man-in-the-middle attacks difficult, if not impossible.” Also, “both senders and receivers should be alerted in the event of an attack.”

The chat app is now available via iOS and web browsers. An Android app is coming soon.
