What are my options when Windows 10 Support ends October 14?

All: I am hearing that Microsoft is pulling a plug on Windows 10 later this year. What does this mean for my current Windows 10 pc, and what are my options?

A: 10 years after the release of the Microsoft operating system, on October 14, 2025, will formally eliminate support for Windows 10. Although you can continue to use Windows 10 PC after this date – and it is understandable why, I gave it a shining review at the launch – you will no longer get any customer support, security update or any other upgrade. Windows 10 will effectively become a zombie operating system, unless any malware or mass security violations make it too insecure. ۔

So what do Windows 10 users do? Let’s consider your choice.

Best Option: Upgrade to Windows 11

For most users, the easiest way to move beyond Windows 10 is to step into Microsoft’s new OS. Windows 11 is a free upgrade for Windows 10 users running the latest 22HS update and also meets minimal hardware specifications. Microsoft is not asking much-just 1 GHz double-core 64-bit processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage-but-security security requirements can be a problem for the old PC. These include the ability to launch in secure boot mode, as well as TPM 2.0 (reliable platform 2.0) module. Windows 11 relies on the latter of biometric login, bit -locked data encryption and other safety features. If you do not have TPM 2.0, you will be stuck with Windows 10 until you get a new PC.

If all these sounds are very complicated, Microsoft’s PC Health Check app can also tell you whether your system is ready for Windows 11. And if you have been bombed on Windows 11 upgrades in the last few years, it is not a matter of great demeanor that your PC is ready for the new OS. (There are many hexes that you can install Windows 11 without TPM 2.0 and secure boots, but they are dangerous and weaken your OS installation.)

If you choose to upgrade, you can expect a relatively painful process. The days pass when Windows upgrade can easily eliminate your entire system. Assuming that you have a new OS to have a new OS has enough hard drive space, now the upgrade process is just a matter of sitting behind and watching your system a few times. I will still recommend backing any necessary data before upgrading, though, if you are involved in any problem. ۔

    Valuable Option: Buy New PC

If your system is very old to support safe boot mode and TPM 2.0, it is probably just the time to upgrade. (Expert users can find YouTube and working work elsewhere, but you need enough adventures to handle the gut hub and handle the choice of security over rides.) Fortunately, we have found many leaders to buy for your help. Must see our best laptop guide, which includes some points about the best specifics to find, as well as some of our favorite systems such as Dell 14 Premium and MacBook Air (because it’s also a good time to consider switching from Windows to Mac).

Our Best Windows Laptop Guide also highlights a system like Asus Zenbook S14 and Level Pro Coplot+ tablet. Although the Sweet spot for the new PC is in the range of $ 50 to $ 1,200 with the current back -to -school promo, you can find a very capable laptop and desktops for less than $ 500, and occasionally less than less than $ 500. But if you are looking for a high end ($ 1,400 and more), our best gaming laptop guide will be helpful.

Dangerous Option: Keep Truck with Windows 10

Windows 10 will not destroy yourself when its support is over, so you can use your old PC only until your old PC dies. But this is a dangerous option because you will not get any security update. A new security error takes only that for a fearless hacker and you can easily suffer from any problems. It also includes getting malware, which can reduce performance and leak your data for hackers, or the Ranksware data theft scheme. And every day on October 14, only OS -level risks arise that the third party’s anti -virus software will be invalid to fight. Trust me – you don’t want to do it. Very minimal, buy yourself another year to detect things

Peruxatinator Option: Pay to increase the security updates of Windows 10

If your hardware may not support moving to Windows 11, you can at least hit the Snow button when you detect things. One -time payment of $ 30 (or 1,000 Microsoft Rewards Points), you can subscribe to Windows 10 Extension Security Update (ESU). As its name appears, ESU will receive Windows 10 security updates, Big Fixes and technical support by October 13, 2026. Certainly, this is only one year of extra help, but it can at least buy you enough time to do more research on the new PC, or wait for holiday sales. This cost this, this is the first time that Microsoft has offered any kind of ESU to consumers. Generally, they are the only way to get additional help for corporate IT admins without moving to a new OS.
