    • Google’s Android earthquake system sources are derived from a smartphone aclameter to detect earthquake activity.
    • The system has detected more than 18,000 earthquakes and has informed millions in about 100 countries.
    • Consumers receive important seconds of warning, which enables them to take security before shaking.

Google introduced earthquake warnings for Android devices back in 2020, and increased this feature in September 2024 to cover the US states. Recently, Google also increased Android earthquake warnings to wear OS Smart Watch so that you could be warned of earthquake activity on your wrist. But have you ever wondered if these warnings really work? Do they do anything good if they make you aware of the earthquake a few seconds before? As it reveals, it is a great idea to crowded with millions of Android smartphones to create the world’s largest earthquake detection system.

With Android earthquake warning systems, Google converted Excelrometers into a powerful, pocket -shaped earthquake detection system in Android smartphones. According to Google, the system has detected more than 18,000 earthquakes and has sent warnings to millions of people in about 100 countries. This pressive Alerts provide people with important moments to remove people from dangerous things and positions and cover the earthquake.

How does the Android earthquake warnings work?

All Android phones come with the Excelrometer, which is traditionally used to detect changes in motion and familiarity to provide auto -rotation properties. As it turns out, the Excelrometer can also detect the earthquake. This data and the user’s coarse location has been sent to the Google earthquake detection server, which analyzes the data of many of the obese location to confirm that the earthquake is occurring and its location and expansion is estimated.

The system then sends alerts to users. These can either be a beerware alert for the estimated lighting or tech action alerts, which occupy the phone screen and the estimates play a loud sound for strong shaking.

How effective is the Android earthquake warning system?

Google has said it has issued warnings for more than 2,000 earthquakes ended by 790 million alerts sent on the phone worldwide. The system has extended the number of people with access to the early earthquake system, which has increased by 250 million to 2025 in 2019.

During a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines in November 2023, Google sent the first alert just 18.3 seconds after the earthquake began. People close to the center received 15 seconds warning, while the distance reached a minute. In this example, about 2.5 million people were informed of the earthquake before feeling shaking!

Similarly, the first alert was issued in November 2023 for a 5.7 magnitude earthquake in Nepal, 15.6 seconds after the earthquake. People who experienced a moderate shaking had a warning of 10 to 60 seconds, which provided more than 10 million alerts!

The first alert was issued eight seconds after the start of the earthquake in April 2025, during the magnitude 6.2 earthquake. The people who experienced a strong tremor was a warning time, which was from 20 to 20 seconds, and more than 16 million alerts were provided. The animation below shows the shaking phones like yellow dots, the yellow circle is the rapid moving p wave of the earthquake, while the red circle is the slow, more harmful S wave.

Animation also shows time in the upper left corner, and you can see the wave of the panic before the yellow circle until the red circle passes, and provide people with valuable seconds to cover the earthquake.

Google has also continued to improve its intensity estimates, with the first severity estimates that the absolute error falls from 0.5 to 0.25, making its accuracy uniform or even better than traditional earthquake networks.

Google also surveyed more than 1.5 million people, and 85 % of the warning was very helpful. Even when people do not feel shaky, they largely admire the warning to be vigilant about the potential dangers. People who have received a tech action alert usually took action (ie “drop, core, and hold hold”), further confirming the utility of warnings.
