I still remember when my husband slapped his € 10 basic mobile plan with a lot of € 70 extra fees because he mistakenly went online for a few minutes during a baby in Turkey. Since then, avoiding roaming fees has been our personal crusade, especially since we like to travel and when we go out of Europe, our basic local data projects get ridiculous expensive fees.
Over the years, I have developed a three -dimensional strategy to avoid paying roaming fees, and when traveling outside France, they work very good for me, they should also request you, even if you come from. If you are in the United States, my colleague Andrew Grish has particularly added a section section to help you make better decisions about the use of roaming plans than Esims.
Just buy a good trip Esim
Rita El Khuri / Android Authority
The best way to avoid roaming fees is to have a local SIM, but this is not always the most practical solution. That is why I have been singing the definitions of Esims – or electronic Sims for four years, and I will continue to do so. Instead of spending hours in researching the best prepaid operators and SIM plans in the country (or countries), I find a store near my airport or hotel, personally go there and wait for a physical SIM, while often providing identity documents, and then waiting for it to be a non -tongue.
Travel Esims have a lot of benefit. For starters, the research is fast: I usually go to gatherings like Mobyter, Esimdb, or Samsurf to find the best plan for my journey in terms of gigabytes of days and data. I often draw Erillo for short stay or multi -country stops, when I need some limited limited unlimited data for doing some real work, and some other careers such as Globusam or Esemigo in different contexts such as other careers. But if the provider or operator with the best offer is not known for me, I will find a quick to see what people say about their service and will decide accordingly.
When I get my custom, I buy ESIM, install it on my phone in a few minutes, and activate it. All this is done in my sofa comfortable and even before leaving my country, almost Half is done in peaks for half an hour.
An Esim Almost is almost as cheap as it is easy to buy a local SIM and use a roaming plan on your current SIM.
This ensures that I am ready when my train enters a new country or lands at a foreign airport. My new Esim usually goes online in less than a few minutes, allowing me to connect Uber pickup, research on my public transport routes, or just tell my loved ones that I have been safely landed on WhatsApp or Google Messages.
The simplicity, performance and convenience of buying an ESIM is not beating an ESIM than getting a local SIM to avoid roaming. People accepted the burning of roaming fees because it was much easier than detecting the whole process of buying a local SIM, but with Esims, all this trial has come to some easy steps. The convenience is an excuse.
The only thing to remember is that many Esims are just data, so they will not allow you to make phone calls. If you want to be able to call the logistics or call the restaurant for your Air BNB host, you should make sure that the ESIM you buy also allows for phone calls. Fortunately, though, nowadays, most businesses offer alternatives to email or instant messaging for phone calls, and I have not felt the need to keep calling with me in dozens of countries in recent years. That is why I just stick to the cheap, just data, but your needs may vary.
Turn off roaming on my main SIM before traveling
One of the mistakes I made often and it costs me extra when I started traveling for the first time and using Essims that I had forgotten to close the roaming on my primary SIM at the right time.
Look, Android does not allow you to turn off roaming if you are disconnected from the network or the SIM has been disabled. My fault was that I always turned into the plane mode on my pixel before going on the plane, just to discover when I got down that I could not disable roaming on my primary SIM without going online with a few seconds to enable the SIM menu. In some cases (ESIM is not yet fully configured when using a default data provider or when I purchased several years ago), it gave birth to dozens of euros because my phone would roam during these short seconds while apps were caught and thus made a number of expensive data.
Sometimes you may be away from it, but it is always safe to disable roaming on your home SIM before traveling.
The second option would be to keep my basic SIM inactive on the entire part of the journey, thus the risk of disappearance of important calls or messages.

Living from all of them, I started to follow these steps religiously on every trip: I go Settings> Network and Internet> Sims> Pick up my primary SIM and then disable RoamingBefore turning on aircraft mode or disconnecting. This ensures that even if I accidentally activate my central SIM, it will not use roaming data. And if I choose to retain access to my upcoming phone calls and messages, there is still no risk of taking a lot of fees due to the app and data updates.
Use VPN on Hotel and Public WiFi
Data, whether travel -friendly ESIM or local project, is often not as cheaper as Wi -Fi. When traveling, I often go for 5GB or 10GB projects that are sufficient for Google Maps direction and search, messaging, browsing, and use of different apps for their travel period. But it is never enough if I need to do something, run a football game, or back up your Google. For a few years, I refrained from doing any of it on public Wi -Fi networks, then I decided that it was time to adopt VPN’s life.
I still do not contact many public networks in cafes, airports and hotels during my trips, but when I do, it is always with VPN to keep my data secreted and more private. This ensures that other users or organizers on the same public network cannot attack me, can’t track my browsing, or access my personal data.
Since I often fight Google Pixel, I activate built -in and free VPN through Google. This is a failed solution for my needs, especially since I only need a temporary VPN for my journey. On other phones, I mostly resort to proton VPN, which is free. If you need a more powerful VPN that offers you faster and allows you to choose a country that is tunneling to stream your net flakes or sports as if you are still in the same country, there are many VPNs selection between Nord VPN, Surfers, Express VPN, and others. (If your home router allows it, you can also set up a VPN for free that you can directly configure tunnels from your home network to tunnels. Synology, Ubiquiti, ASUS, TP-Link, and other brands offer this on their routers.)
Just select the VPN you want, and know that you can contact any free Wi -Fi network in the nearby nearby. No need to rotate to maintain your security, and no need to buy a huge and expensive ESIM plan to ensure that you can perform most of your data heavy activities. I call it the best balance between winning and convenience and security.
Roming Friendly Best Plan in USA: When use and avoid them
Edgar Survints / Android Authority
Most indicators of the aforementioned Rita are certainly applied to the United States. For example, services like Arielo can be a great choice for people who already use one of the big three providers and seek additional coverage while traveling abroad. In my experience, the use of ESIM is the easiest way to access these projects. However, there are also some excellent prepaid projects in the US market that can meet your travel needs without additional costs.
Although most prepaid plans are designed to replace your central career, what if you are looking for a temporary solution during your journey? It honestly depends on the length of your overseas stay and whether you go to a single country or several places.
For short, single -purpose visits, travel Esim services such as Aerilo or Holophy are potentially your most cost -effective option. For example, for Japan a few weeks a short journey is valid for 30 days for 10GB of data. Service like Google FI will cost you more.
If your travel projects include expansion establishment or visits to several countries, Google FI becomes a valuable alternative. Its flexible plan is $ 10 per month, plus $ 10 per gigabyte data. Although it can be collected rapidly, Google FI easily and immediately operates in more than 200 countries. Therefore, if you are going on a long, multi -country business trip, Google can easily justify the use of FI.
For repeated passengers, whether it be a business or a leisure, another appealing option is constantly turning into a prepaid. Prepaid projects often offer more affordable services and, in some cases, meet or exceed the international travel facilities provided by large careers.
Here are two standout recommendations:
- For short trips, the visible is a great choice. The View Plus Plan costs only $ 30 every month and contains a free global pass travel day every month, which can be collected for up to 12 days. For additional $ 10 per month, the Plus Pro plan adds an additional global pass travel day each month.
- For long stay, Google FI is unprecedented. Although the unlimited premium plan is at a cost of $ 65 per month, it is a mirror of large carrier features and goes beyond them by providing 50 GB of high speed data every month in more than 200 locations. In addition, along with multiple lines, the price per line can be reduced to $ 40.
Although two of the best prepaid carriers are the best prepaid carriers to talk about international features, you will find that providers like American mobile and mint provide at least some international access in 2025.
