When Google unveiled Android XR last year, it seemed that Apple’s vision pro had a clear reaction: It was a real mixed reality platform plan that could easily hop between Meta’s Ray Benons such as AR, VR and smart glasses. Today in Google I/O 2025, Google announced another developer preview for Android XR, and something else showed how it works in headset and smart glasses. Before we look at the Android XR devices, this will happen for a while, though, Google also revealed that the Samsung project will arrive at Mohan Headset later this year. In addition, Zariel is also building the project Aura, a pair of teachers operated by the platform.
Refuse: Google demoped the prototype Android XR smart glasses in I/O with a direct translation, called “lightweight, but with a limited field”. Google is not planning to sell these devices, but it is in partnership with Warby Parker and soft monster to provide frames for future smart glasses.
Basically, there is not much to be excited right now. It is clear that Google is working hard to catch both Apple and MetaAta, which in fact already has XR products on the shelves. Given that Google tends to rapidly kill its expensive projects – just take a look at Google Glass, Cardboard and Dreams of the Day, which were early knives in AR and VR – it is difficult to trust the future of Android XR. Is there enough better XR hardware availability to make the platform a success? At this point, it is very difficult to tell.
For now, although, it seems that Google’s goal is to provide all the features you are expecting with Android XR. Its second developer preview increases the ability to play 180 degrees and 360 degrees Degree Videos, brings hand tracking to apps and supports dynamic refresh rate (which can seriously help battery life). As expected, Google is making it easier to integrate its Gemini AI into Android XR apps, the company made something promised when it announced the platform last year.
In a series of pre -submitted videos, Google showed the ideal ways to use Gemini in smart glasses and headset. If you have a built -in display in glasses (Meta -ray bales are not yet offered), you may see a small map of Google when you prepare dinner or take a picture of your partner (seriously) to dance with your partner, give you instructions to instruct you. All I can say is: “Cool demo, brother.” When all these are working in headsets and glasses, go back to us that we can really wear.
Update 5/21, 2:45 pm et: This story has been updated with regard to Google’s XR Protypes glasses.
