Google Maps is getting a Gemini infusion. Google’s AI Assistant will power what the company is billing as a “hands-free, conversational experience.” According to Google, it will feel like “having a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat who can confidently help you get where you’re going”.
No one has ever lacked confidence in AI chatbots, the problem is how reliable what they say is, and of course Google remains mum about that. Anyway, you can ask Gemini anything while navigating with Google Maps.

Even polynomial queries should work fine. Gemini can also do other things like add events to your calendar — well, at least your Google calendar. You can even report traffic jams with your voice. The feature will roll out to Android and iOS “in the coming weeks.”
Interestingly, the directions are also getting a Gemini-powered upgrade, and will use signs to guide you – for example, “turn right after Thai Siam restaurant”. As you approach each of them, the symbols that will be used will also be highlighted on your map. The feature is now rolling out on Android and iOS in the US.

Even if you’re not navigating anywhere, Google Maps will alert you to stopped traffic, and proactively notify you of roadblocks ahead. These alerts on Android are now live in the US.

Finally, you can tap the camera in the search bar in Google Maps and hold your phone up to point out what you’re looking for — restaurants, cafes, shops, or landmarks you think are famous. When you look at pins you can tap the mic to ask questions about each place, “like you’re a friend”.

You’ll thank these answers for “the powerful combination of Gemini capabilities and Google Maps’ understanding of locations around the world,” the company says. This new Lens feature is “slowly” rolling out in the US on both Android and iOS.
