Roblox is joining the growing ranks of the online platform that are trying to better understand the age of their teenage children. The company is developing a new “age estimate” for young people 13 and older.
With updates, adolescents will be indicated to check age, which requires video selfie to access its new low -restricted chat feature, called the “Trusted Connection”. Roblox is relying on personality personality for the original “estimate”, and consumers who fail to check will also have the option to provide ID. Once young people have “unlocking” reliable contacts by sharing video selfies or IDs, they will be able to participate in chats with friends with “filters”, including “party” group text and sound chats in chats with friends.
Earlier, Roblox has been experiencing his chat properties not to be polluted enough and make children search for children on the platform for adults. The company notes in its announcement that parents will be able to monitor their children’s “reliable contacts” through parental control features, and that the purpose of this feature is only for those who already “know and trust”. Young people can only add reliable contacts through their current contacts or QR code.
“We believe that chat without filters should be accessible only to users who have confirmed their age.” The company writes in a blog post. “It’s not just about compliance. It is about engaging and building appropriate digital spaces for everyone.”
Although Roblox is not using the term “age verification”, the new feature has come at a time when social media companies and other platforms are making increasing calls to examine the age of their underage users. Reddutt and Bluesky have recently announced age verification features for consumers in the UK – a new online safety law requires a larger platform. In the United States, the mandate of age verification mandates are also receiving steam.
Several states have introduced age verification measures for social media, though rules in Arkansas and Utah have been blocked so far. Utah also recently passed a law that requires app stores to verify consumers’ ages. This is a point of view that has been endorsed by companies like Meta and SNAP. And the Supreme Court has recently retained a Texas law that requires adult websites to check age verification.
Roblox, which mostly allows children under the age of 13 to hold an account unlike the online platform, is in some different positions. And for now, it is billing its age checks as “optional”. But there is a need to have an estimation of an age already in the future if it needs to take a strong approach in the future.
