Don’t tell Amazon, but my heart sank when I first heard Robin Hood The adaptation was coming to MGM+. But after watching it, I’m mostly won over. As it turns out, you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I have always been of the firm belief that 2010 Robin Hood The movie starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett is the best we have (I didn’t grow up watching the animated Disney movie from 1973, so I’m missing out). However, newcomer Jack Peyton in the titular role and Lauren McQueen as Marian are a breath of fresh air.
Robin Hood is the perfect example of good storytelling done well with unknown faces
look
Instead of a distant villain who takes from the rich and gives to the poor (though we see this a bit more as the series progresses), the concept of who we know is Robin Hood To be is immediately stated in the question. A nickname for this version of Rob, he has a complicated relationship with his home and family, and is deeply in love with his way of life, which is constantly threatened.
Our opening episodes deftly use our time to return to the 3D character he’s never been before, and it’s our starting point to see our story in a whole new light. Although he maintains a close bond with Marianne (Peyton and McQueen’s chemistry feels as natural as breathing), it’s never obvious, and we’re nurturing a beautiful Romeo and Juliet-style connection between them.
I can’t give our leads all the credit for narrative satisfaction, though. It’s incredible how many movies and TV shows these days don’t get the basics right – I know I sound like ’87 when I say this, but as a trained scriptwriter, it really bothers me.
English and Glenn know exactly what they’re doing here, and nailing the story Robin Hood It allows the overall plot to stay tight and on message right from the start. Yes, there are definitely episodes that are more boring than others (there’s a lot of Rob and his ‘Merry Men’ sitting around in the woods in despair), but every episode Clifffinger is an absolute blinder.
Without fail, the final 30 seconds of each episode deliver a curveball that quickly turns everything we’ve learned so far on its head. This means you can’t do anything else with your time other than quickly watch the next episode, and I love the feeling of investment in those moments. Honestly, I’d say this is the best episode of the entire series.
Surprisingly, we don’t need to look every time someone approaches
While the physical scenes between Rob and Marian are wholesome and harmless, I couldn’t believe my eyes at how unnecessarily obvious the rest of the scenes were. Robin Hood is. This especially falls on Priscilla of Nottingham (Lydia Peechum), who gets back at her father by trying to possess the physical strength of the chief of guards.
Add in Rob’s companions in the servant chambers of Eleanor’s palace, and it all feels a little off. Entire dialogue scenes are executed at questionable points, and you already know that the women are close to naked while the men remain mostly clothed.
It’s 2025, and we can go to the point where women are using their ‘feminine wills’ as power to include non-graphic sex scenes that don’t serve to advance the plot. It’s certainly not a feminist move by any stretch of the imagination — although there will be an intimate coordinator on set, these creative decisions are being made by men at the end of the day.
These scenes also oddly undermine Connie Nelson’s Eleanor of Aquitaine, arguably the best-written character of the whole. Robin Hood. Every word that comes out of Nelson’s mouth is a piece of sage wisdom using his own disease to coordinate attacks and alliances through international correspondence.
It’s a masterclass in consistently undermining women throughout history, rewriting their stories while actually making their own in a man’s world. Clearly, Nielsen has cornered the market for playing royalty, in which we take everything about Lucilla. Gladiator And enhancing it in all the best ways. I wouldn’t be crazy about it if Amazon gave us a spinoff entirely focused on it.
I’m nitpicking here, but overall, I’m impressed. I won’t be lobbing any more Robin Hood legends anytime soon, but MGM+ has proven what’s possible in the tired realm of adaptations.

The best TV for all budgets
