A new Omdia report is out today and it crowns Samsung as the winner of the smartphone sales game in the third quarter (July to September). The Korean company shipped 60.6 million devices for a 19% market share, up 6% from Q3 2024.
Apple is second with 56.5 million shipments and 18% of the pie, up 4% from the year-ago quarter. Xiaomi ranked third with 43.4 million shipments, 14% market share, and 1% year-on-year (YOY) growth. Transcession (owner of Infinix, Itel, and Techno) is fourth with 28.6 million shipments, 9% market share, and largest YOY growth of the top five at 12%. Vivo ranked fifth with 28.5 million shipments and a 9% market share, up 5% from Q3 2024 numbers.
Samsung’s growth was driven by the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7, as well as the A07 and A17. Apple’s base iPhone 17 “improves launch expectations due to improved value proposition”. Xiaomi shipments declined in China after the state subsidy program ended, but growth in the Asia-Pacific and other regions shows it. Vivo remained strong in India, overtook Huawei in China, and continued to grow in Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America.

The entire market shipped 320.1 million units in Q3, a 3% year-over-year increase. Shipments to North America and more to China declined YOY, while strong growth was recorded in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. In Africa, shipments increased by 25%, and in Asia Pacific by 5%.

Interestingly, Omdia says overall growth has been weak in the sub-$100 and sub-$700 devices, while the mid-range is weak. In the near future, higher prices are expected for new devices, and this will hamper the growth of the low-end segment.
