With Halloween just around the corner, it’s the perfect time for fans to watch This: Welcome to Derry. Anyone who’s read Stephen King’s epic novel IT will know just how much ground it covers, so there’s plenty of room to dive even deeper — and this new HBO Max show does just that.
While King’s novel spans 27 years, focusing on the late 1950s and mid-1980s, documenting the time periods where ‘It’ awakens to terrorize Derry, this series focuses on the 60s, so it covers an era we haven’t yet explored.
At the time of writing, only the pilot has aired on HBO Max with the second episode arriving on Halloween (appropriately) in the US. I’ve seen the first five episodes and I can confidently say that this is a solid pilot, setting up the rest of the series, but fans may be a bit disappointed with one big decision.
Whereas Derry and its inhabitants are all bound to the Lord This storyline, fans will no doubt be keen to see Bill Skarsgård back as Pennywise. He gave a great performance This is a chapter And its sequel This is chapter twobut he has been used sparingly so far in the TV series. But who knows what the future holds?
Having said that, this suspense is fun and I haven’t seen the last three episodes, so it’s very likely that we’ll see more of them as the show progresses. Andy and Barbara Machetti are once again to consider This is Helm, after his films, I’m sure he’ll take the show in the direction it needs to go.
Feels like we need a show This: Welcome to Derry For a while now. According to a post on the thread as spotted by MovieWeb, even Stephen King himself was inspired by it. That’s high praise from an author who has famously hated some adaptations of his work, so if you don’t take my word for it, listen to the King.
From my point of view, it was much better to have dairy delivered at a slower pace than the film delivered. Packing the story into eight episodes means we get to see more characters, more scenarios and take our time exploring a city. Really I wish we could leave, because it’s so interesting.
The show also has some great relationships set up. I can’t exactly spoil that, but I found myself invested in some of the dynamics and scared of what might happen to characters I already love.
There are plenty of Easter eggs for Stephen King fans to enjoy as well Shiningand I think it’s worth it to stick around for the second episode and beyond because there’s a lot to scare and delight in equal measure.
Expect some goofy moments, body horror and plenty of surprises. If you’re already a fan, you’re in for a good time This And if you’re new, maybe this series will inspire you to check out the book and the original movies, too.
