Although Pokemon Sporting rom phones haven’t really changed that much in terms of design over the past few years, with each generation introducing new functionalities that make upgrading a no-brainer. Sword / ShieldThe Rotom phone—a long time ago—came with a bare-bones camera that made it easy to snap wide-angle (screen) shots in the wilds of the Gellar region. Inside the camera of the second-generation Rotom phone Red color / Violet There was a noticeable improvement, but the device’s real standout feature was its ability to prevent you from falling to your death if you fell from a height.

While none of the early Rotom phones were as interesting as Pokemon Legends: Arceus‘Ark phone, they both talked about how Pokemon The consumer tech of the universe has become increasingly streamlined and robust. This trend continues Pokemon Legends: Za With a new Rotom phone that feels like it’s designed for urban exploration.

Like its predecessors, the conservative design of the third-gen Rotom phone is a reminder of that PokemonPokédexes have lost some of their personality over the time since they went from being physical objects to downloadable applications. But what the new phone lacks in aesthetic flair, it makes up for in better hardware and some fresh gimmicks—including one for jumping off rooftops—that’s a must-have for anyone visiting the modern-day city of Lumios.

    good

    • Hands-free usability is more robust
    • More active camera array with zoom
    • RotoGlide is a game changer
    • Excellent call quality and battery life

    bad

    • The body design is getting a bit long in the tooth
    • No accessories
    • Kalos may not work outside of the region
    • There is no snazzy pokedex art
    • Yet your helpers cannot send Rotom into battle

It was as good as it looked Red color / VioletWhile the Rotom phone comes with a second lens, the most disappointing thing about the device was that there was no way to zoom in on things in the distance when you were walking around Palladia. That second lens looked like it never really happened do it Anything you had to get physically close to a wild Pokemon and Then Open the camera app to take eye-catching pictures of them, which made it very easy to be an attacker. It would have been a non-starter Z. ALumiose, where mindless monsters will go out of their way to fight humans without hesitation.

But in addition to adding a cool new zoom feature via a third (highly active) lens, the new Rotom phone’s back-facing camera array can also be used while in use—something that opens up a whole new world of possibilities for trainers who fancy themselves shutterbugs. It’s easy to post up in Loomis’ wild zone, hide in tall grass, and snap photos of wild Pokémon without making them aware of your presence. And being able to move even when you’re using the rear camera makes it relatively easy to dodge the hell out of in the event that something sees you and decides to launch an attack. (You still have to wait, though, if you’re using the new Rotomphone’s improved front-facing camera.)

While the new Rotom phone’s front-facing camera can be used for video calls, when you try to take a selfie, the Electric/Ghost Pokémon inside the device will automatically activate the back camera and rotate the handheld. Previously you had to hold the second-generation phone in your hand or with a selfie stick to capture pictures of yourself with your favorite Pokémon companions. But the new phone’s resident Rotom can be directed to move the device around, taking photos from different angles and distances, giving you the ability to attack the pose hands-free.

This is especially useful if you’ve downloaded the app to participate in Lumiose’s ZA Royale and want to update your profile picture to something emotive. One major drawback, though, is that the newbie still requires you to be silent while the phone instructs you to take your photos. Using the phone’s limited selection of built-in music, you can lull your Pokemon to sleep or work on a candidate or dramatic photo before snapping it. None of the third-generation Rotomphone’s built-in filters are that great, but they’re easy enough to transfer to another device if you want to do some artistic post-processing yourself.

Along with the ZA Royal Hub, an updated, Lumiose-specific Pokédex is the most useful new Rotom phone application. It all does basic ‘dex stuff like track how many Pokemon you’ve seen and caught, where certain species live within the city, and how they move. It also features a separate list of Pokemon with their mega-evolved forms, but what’s great about this version of Pokedex is that it gives each Pokemon you can catch its own unique entry, which for some reason wasn’t the case on the last Rotom phone.

Unfortunately, the new pokedex doesn’t feature the same kind of fancy artwork for the monsters Red color / VioletBut the new interface is cleaner, more intuitive to use, and eliminates the extra skeuomorphism of the last generation. The default map application also gives you helpful information about which Pokémon appear in Lumiose’s Wild Zone, where Za Royal Battle Zones pop up, and details about places like shopping centers and Pokémon centers.

As of now, the new Roto Glide functionality is what sets this generation of Rotom phones apart from others. The last phone included a safe-landing mode that activated whenever it detected that you had suddenly traveled a sufficient distance. RotoGlide builds on this idea by giving you a short boost when you jump off a ledge, enabling you to sort of bounce through the air. It’s ideal for jumping off rooftops or completing the many scaffolding obstacle courses of Lumios.

Like the Arcphone and both other Rotom phones, the new model has amazing battery life and call reception — at least within Lumios City. I haven’t been able to test the phone outside the city limits, and it’s unclear if this model will work outside the Kalos area. I wasn’t even able to figure out how to activate the phone’s widescreen tablet mode, but other people seem to enjoy it. The thing runs like a dream, though.

My biggest issue with the third-generation Rotomphone is that it doesn’t seem like there are many (if any) cool accessories to help you feel more personal. The device seems to come in a variety of colors, such as red, blue, yellow, white, and a stone gray. But it would be great to see this model get some of the nifty phone cases that can be bought at Palladia.

If you’re coming from the last generation, Roto Glide aside, the new Rotophone is somewhat of an incremental upgrade, but you’ll need it if you really want to get the most out of your time in Lumios City. The beefed-up camera alone makes this another useful tool when you’re out on your next walk Pokemon Travel, and if there are some stylish accessories in the pipeline, the device will be close to perfect.
