If you have a dog, consider these kits
I don’t have a dog, so I didn’t try DNA test kits at home for dogs, but these are especially kits for Baspas and Wisdom Panel dogs, the two companies I have experienced my cats.

How does a DNA test kit work?
Pet DNA tests rely on pet owners who collect cells for testing through the cheek bush, where the sample is put into a safe fluid for sealed or transit. You will send the sample back to the lab in a prepaid envelope. It takes up to five weeks to get the results. (The first time I sent a sample of my cat’s Basel Baspas, the company emailed the results that the results were ineffective, and I had to send another cut, wait for it to be resumed, and wait another five weeks for the results).
In the lab, a sample is analyzed against the company’s breed and genetic health database. They use the ranks of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). This standard technology that is used to identify breeding lineage. Also, the risk of various properties and the risk of common diseases. Basically, the genome of different races contains separate samples of SNPS, which act as a genetic marker. These tests analyze the pet DNA samples for specific SNPs and then compare them to the company’s existing database to assess the formation of breeding types in animals. It not only tells you about the formation of the race, but can also identify the specific DNA continuity that is a marker for potential health risks, such as diseases or hereditary cancer predictions.
However, do not take health or DNA test results as absolute truth. “This can create a false sense of security or wrong alarm,” says Veterinary Amanda Chambers. Send your results to your veterinarian and always follow with a doctor’s visit schedule if your pet is marked as a carrier for a genetic disease.
Limits of DNA test kits at home
After chatting with Jamie Richardson, head of Veterinary Medicine in small door veterinary, I found that these are large areas of boundaries with DNA test kits at home:
- Results depend on the size/diversity of genetic database
- Most kits test leading markers only – not full genome
- Flynn’s data is less developed
- Misinterpretation of results can cause unnecessary concern
How accurate is DNA testing at home?
The Wisdom Panel claims that the results of its breed for cats are more than 98 % accurate and dog tests are more than 99 % accurate.
I have outlined the results below, so you can see the differences in the results of the two kits I experienced, especially with breeding.
One of the problems with widespread disparity in the results is that both companies have different samples and matrix to identify breeds. But the biggest problem for cats owners is that taking the DNA test at home is that you cannot identify most cats with dogs. Unless your cat is a net generation, about 95 % of cats do not belong to the recognized breed. The genetic background of cats is messed up. Basically, for cats, these tests are not able to tell us in a reliable way about the formation of generations, similar to the characteristics of other races in the generation of statistics.
From my research, it seems that the breeding of these tests is more accurate for dogs, because the dog’s DNA is very diverse. After centuries of generations of generations, it is clearly stated after centuries of diversification, and the dog’s DNA changes rapidly, after just a few generations the gene changes rapidly. Cats are no different from their Egyptian ancestors.
Interestingly, in this CBS report in 2023, the news organization sent dogs and human DNAs to various home test companies and yielded different results, including only 65 to 29 % of German Shepherd DNA dogs. Human DNA results were attributed to Bloodog, Border Koli and Ken Carso Mix.
tl; drag
There is not a catch all way to determine pet genetic makeup or lineage. Humans like categories and breeds are primarily human structures, on the basis of which dogs or cats are visible. The genetic part of the test is fun, but take it especially with the salt with cats.
The results of the lineage
If you read above, you know that there is an important difference in the results based on the pool, comparing the sample.
For example, the following are the results I get for my cat’s kg, which is a slim kalico with long, white skin and mostly looks like a cat of the Mine Coon or Norwegian jungle.

Health results
Pet DNA compares a cat or dog’s genetic health testing panel for 49 genetic health predictions. It tests for the top five genetic conditions that can affect pet doctors’ visits. These are for drugs such as drug sensitivity, immune deficiency, and bleeding disorders. They also identified the cat’s blood type (my two cats A) and the risk of transfer (both were moderate).
Basepas tests for health markers up to 115, but my cat only received the results of 44 genetic diseases (owners are encouraged to check the results often when missing markers are added because more data are available). The list felt much depth than the wise panel test, testing the gene for markers against the disorders in muscle and integrated tissue. Eyes; Metabolic, autoimmune, and endocrine system; Blood; And more. Both of my cats, cum branches and basils were cleansed because none of them had a gene that marks them as a potential career for genetic diseases. It also identified the risk of blood type and transition, which was another moderate (the same results I got with the Wisdom Panel test).
If your pet is flagged for any of these results, don’t panic. “The presence of a particular gene does not always mean that the patient will develop a special disorder that is associated with this gene,” says Chambers.
Oral health results
The wisdom panel does not screen for oral health, which is a major problem in many pets, and can lead to major dental extraction and precision problems.
Oral health was a concern for me, and twenty -powder tests for oral health by testing against the oral micro -biochemase. In this regard, the Baspas wins.
According to the results of the twenty pow, there was a low risk for the Klavar Periodical Disease and the retrieval of the dentist, but at a higher risk of helicoposis. The report states that unfortunately breathing may be a major problem of health, but it was cleansed due to the illness, so I was not sure what to do with this information.

My second cat, basil, was at greater risk for all the above mentioned dental markers, and twenty pos planned for it: “Adopt daily oral health care routines, basal routines with the Veterinary Oral Health Council to meet with the accepted product, and meet with you in the next month.”

Although I was terrified of the results, I liked that Baspose recommended me the next steps so that I would plan to take care. And it is important to remember that these results do not necessarily mean that the development of a pet is guaranteed.
“This may prove to be a helpful flag for your veterinarian (…) for your veterinarian (…), but that does not mean that aggressive testing is currently needed,” says Richardson. “DNA tests are tools tools to support – don’t change – take special care care.”
The results of the traits
Both tests had this section, which tests for coat color properties and variations, but I found it mostly useless. The claim about the physical traits of both cats of the wisdom panel was correct. But with basipas, the kilo, a slim calcu, is likely to be black.
I can see with my eyes how my cat looks like, but if you are a genetic nerve, it can be fun to see what the original DNA reflects.
A note on allergy testing kits at home
I recently experienced my two cats for $ 100 for their allergies and intolerance similar home, 5 steriles pet food and environmental intolerance tests for $ 100. On this, you just need to send the fur sample to the lab in the mail. The results were sent to my inbox within seven days. The report states that both of my cats showed severe intolerance in the common ingredients in their diet, such as food and poultry food. He sent me panic about the health and relief of his cats.
After further research, I learned that hair/fur samples are not a proper way to measure allergies and intolerance, and studies claim that these results have been claimed and they do not perform better than opportunity and often produce contradictory or false results.
Richardson says “there is no scientific evidence to support allergy testing through hair, skin or wholesale.” Environmental allergy testing LOOD allergies and intra -dermal have become the standard of sleeping diet under the supervision of veterinarian for skin testing or blood tests. “
Therefore, save your money and consult a doctor instead if you suspect that your pets are suffering from allergies or intolerance.
