MicroSD cards are small but slow. M2 storage sticks in your computer are sharp but large and fully attached. Now, a new type of SSD outside China can be excellent in both worlds-and it is already ready to appear in two modern gaming portables.
The Chinese storage maker Baven is calling it a “mini -SSD”, though another manufacturer describes it as “1517”. Its measure is just 15 mm x 17mm x 1.4 mm thick, smaller than US money and slightly larger than microSD. Nevertheless, it offers a maximum of 3,700 megabytes per second (or 3,400MB/S) compared to the PCI 4×2 connection, and offers 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capabilities.
Nano Sims used in recent smartphones are still small, though, and M2 drives are still faster. I whipped a sharp chart so you can easily compare different storage cards and Sims:
It is unclear whether the Baven’s mini -SSD is a real standard that storage makers can easily adopt. But the company has marketing it with its dedicated slot for laptops, tablets, phones, cameras and more that work like a smartphone SIM card slot: Stay in a pin to remove the tray.
The company claims IP68 water and dust resistance, which can be especially easy for phones, and three meters drop resistance.
Two modern Chinese gaming portables are already seen customers, both of which made announcements in Charanjoi last week. GPD One 5 is, Monster Battery’s Back Pack Welding Strexcells Hello Hand Hand We told you in July, about which you can see with the new SSD in the video above this story.
We have no idea of pricing on these new SSDS, and they have not yet seen the list of products.
