Updated: August 6, 2025 (1 AM ET): YouTube acknowledges the issue of playback speed not to work on its Android app. His team is investigating the issue. A fix should end soon. Here is the complete update posted on YouTube community forums:
We know some of you are facing problems for adjusting the speed of playback while watching videos on Android devices. Our teams are actively investigating the issue! We will update this thread with new information. Thank you very much for your patience when we solve it!
Original article: August 5, 2025 (11:02 pm et): The YouTube app for Android faces an error that effectively broke the playback speed control. Currently, trying to change the speed of a video playback does not work as expected, most users are trapped at a default 1x speed.
This problem is not limited to free YouTube accounts. I am YouTube Premium Subscriber and also unable to adjust the speed of playback, only to take advantage of the 4x speed offered as a premium beneficiary. The playback speed navigator does not just respond to the changes, and its speed returns to 1x, regardless of what speed you are selected.
Many users have reported the same problem on the Reddate, but so far, Google has not been officially response or recovering.

It does not seem that the YouTube app will work to install and reinstall and resume your phone. Many users have tried these steps but have reported that they do not work. Interestingly, playback speed controls are still working properly on the YouTube website and the iOS app.
On Android, tapping and holding the screen still increases the speed of the playback to 2X. However, the standard speed settings accessible through the gear icon are irresponsible.
Hopefully, Google is aware of this problem and will release a fix soon.
