Thanks to my extremely poor direction, Google Maps is an essential travel app for me – for both short trips for different parts of the city as well as long paths that I have no chance to memorize. I love the ability to avoid traffic estimates, alternative root options, and tools.
But there is a feature that I think Google Maps are in dire need: Warning users of dangerous routes with the recommended, high crime of alternative routes.
Do you trust Google Maps to navigate you on safe paths?

Google Maps have misunderstood me multiple times

Although I rely on Google Maps for my navigation needs, the app has passed me through dangerous routes on numerous occasions. I live in a country with a crime rate (South Africa), where you have to stay on your guard more often. But in an attempt to provide me the shortest way, the app will often recommend that I pass through many crime areas.
Google Maps have taken me to dangerous areas on numerous occasions, usually avoiding busy paths.
It is the highest on long paths, including highways. But I also did this on 15 minutes of trips that take me to neighboring areas. The most memorable example of this was when Google Maps removed me from an important highway to go on the road in an informal settlement, which is considered one of the most dangerous places in my province. When I moved to my current suburban area in Cape Town, my first trip to the airport passed through another dangerous area – drivers with road traces were warned about the hotspot of crime on the way.
I have molded it to some extent. I try to remember when to ignore some intersections or off ramps of Google Maps. I prepared my parents’ way to avoid a particular highway. But that doesn’t help when I am on a path when I never traveled before. It also depends on my already knowledge of which routes are dangerous, which does not help in areas I am fully unfamiliar with.
I am not the only one who has experienced this problem

Google Maps has no problem for me to direct me through illicit consulted routes, which is why I think it is time for Google to start adding crime advice and allowed consumers to leave dangerous routes. This will be especially useful for tourists using the app in a foreign country, as they are allegedly weak.
Google Maps in Google Maps Cape Town was under investigation of Google Maps due to several high -level events after tourists arrived at Crime Hotspot.
In fact, in 2024, the map app tried Google after sending them to a notorious dangerous area. The couple was attacked during a trip to Cape Town Airport to Airbon B. There were more attacks on tourists, which resulted in Google removed the maps suggested.
But stopping a path after several attacks fixes the problem only after the fact. By adding a feature that notes high crime areas, Google Maps can already warn users that the area they are traveling or traveling through. This will help tourists, but also the residents of cities and countries will face more crimes.
How can the Crime Hotspot feature work in Google Maps

Google Maps can suggest you the most effective fuel -based way based on your car engine type. When you visit an area, you can also choose to avoid tools. The app also allows users to distribute reviews of some locations. So I don’t see why it can’t include ways to avoid high crime routes.
Google Maps changes in the recommendations of the Cape Town International Airport show that cooperation with local authorities is possible. But the move was also a reflex, which found a path that had long been known because of its danger. It does not seem that the hotspot of other crimes around the route, which is most famous.
Google can use publicly available data, cooperation with officials and companies, and user feedback to add safety advice.
But there is a ton of publicly available data that Google can use to prepare its way recommendations. It can even cooperate with companies to highlight any concern sector.
It can also allow local consumers’ opinions to report intersections and routes that are at risk to passengers. You can currently offer road information such as whether the road is one -way, private or closed in the app. Therefore, it is fully possible for consumers to note the fields of concern. Increasing customs route support in Google Maps’s mobile app can also help identify your priority path, such as Apple Maps.
Google Maps have many features, which is why I use it as my preferred navigation app. In fact, he saved me from being lost in the Irish rural areas last year when the rental car built -in was not found in GPS where I was living.
But for many people, crime is a major problem, especially in many tourists around the world. The time has come for Google maps to adapt to this fact and make it a priority feature.
