Messaging experience on Android is going to improve once again. The GSMA has formally announced the Universal Profile 3.1, which is the latest version of the technical quality that strengthens RCS (Rich Communication Services). This update introduces some new abilities that will gradually include apps and carriers that support the platform, including Google Messages (and hopefully Apple messages at a location). Universal Profile 3.1 The head feature is the add XHE-AAAC audio codec, which supports better sound quality in shared audio content. This means voice messages, background sound clips, and other features of audio sent by RCS will now have a clear and more natural playback. According to the GSMA, this increase benefits both speeches and non -speeches, including AI chat boot interactions that rely on sound. It should also help ensure more permanent playbacks in various devices and network conditions. Although implementing this update may take some time in apps and carriers, it has a significant upgrade identifying how Android users talk through sound.

Beyond audio improvement, Universal Profile also introduces 3.1 technical changes, which aims to connect with RCS mobile networks. In particular, the GSMA has presented a “new mechanism to connect the RCS client to operator services”, which should have a more reliable and smooth onboarding experience for users to set up RCS for the first time. However, the details of how it works behind the screen have not yet been fully shared.
The upgrade also includes some small upgrades. These include helping to use deep links to start interacting with better spam protection, more secure file transfer, and other apps or websites. It is expected that all of these will be included in the future version of Google Messages such as apps as they adopt 3.1 standards.
We are closely following the evolution of RCS, especially when it plays a major role in the messaging ecosystem of Android. With this update, quality is even more competitive against services like iMessage and WhatsApp, especially when talked about sound communication. Although RCS still depends on carrier and device support, updates such as Universal Profile 3.1 show that it is being permanently manufactured in a rich, more capable messaging platform.
