- Android 16 introduces direct updates, a new feature that raises the ongoing information in the status bar, but does not include media playback reports.
- The reason for this is that media apps use a dedicated “media style” template, which is not one of the specific styles that can be promoted directly into the update.
- Changing styles will deprive media apps to key playback control and features, with the trade off -developers unlikely to make this new functionality.
Listening to music, audioboxes, or podcasts is one of the most common smartphone activities, which is why Android media gives special treatment to notifications. Instead of collecting them with other alerts, Android has shown media reports on the lock screen, and even on the display, under the prompt settings panel. Nevertheless, you have to draw the notification shadow to see the current track name. A new feature in Android 16 introduces the status bar chips that can solve it, but sadly, it will not work with your favorite music player. Why is it here

Android brings a new information feature called 16 live updates, which is primarily a version of the Android of direct activities on iOS. There are direct updates that are high to appear significantly on the system lock screen, always on display, notification panels, and the status bar. Through the design, they are always fully expanded and cannot be collapsed by the user.
On the lock screen and always on the display, direct updates are fully expanded even when other notifications are minimized. In the notification drawers, they appear at the top, while at the status bar, they become a small piece of text with a icon with a icon and the app.

In order to qualify as a direct update, an app’s notification is required to meet many important standards.
- It must be a Special permission. The app will have to request a new post_Promoted_ notification permission added to Android 16 QPR1, which the user can give or cancel at any time.
- It should be Apparently requested. The app must ask the system to promote your notification directly in the update, either by setting the additional_ required_promoted_ongoing flag or using the application promotedong API.
- It should be “Affluent. It tells the system that the notification is for background work that the user is “actively busy”, which prevents it from being dismissed.
- It should be followed Specific rules of formatting. A title and priority of the notification should be the least. This group cannot be summarized, the customs cannot be embedded, or the customs background color cannot be used.
Although the previous requirements are straight, but there is a final, important limit: notification style. Notifications using only one of the four specific templates can be promoted directly in the update.
- Standard: This is the basic notification template with no special features.
- Big Text: This template is used for notifications containing a large block of expanding text like email.
- Call: For incoming call alerts, this manner is often presented a large picture of the contact and specific calls related to the call such as “response” or “fall”.
- Advance: New in Android 16, this style is designed for any work that needs to be displayed.
So, why can’t media information be updated directly, especially since they often have bars of progress? The answer is that they do not use Android 16’s progress. Instead, music, audiobock, and podcast apps are usually used by dedicated media style template. As mentioned earlier, they do this to get the special treatment provided for Android for media playback notifications. If they turn into a development style, their notifications will not be applied to the immediate settings panel or the media output switches, other than other things, will not be shown. Ultimately, media apps must sacrifice the necessary functionality to access the feature of direct updates-it is unlikely to make a trade.

This raises this question, then: Why can’t Google just reveal media style notifications as a direct update? However, Samsung has already done something in an UI 7, which shows media reports as a default “direct information”. This will be a great user’s experience, which will allow you to see media controls with the same tap on the current track and the status bar chip, eliminating the need to swipe down.

As far as we can tell, there is no technical reason why Google cannot do so. It seems that the company does not consider a proper use case only for media playbacks directly updates. According to Google’s documents, the feature is for activities that are “actively in development, with a separate start and end” and requires user attention “in full activity”. Proper use includes “active navigation, released phone calls, active ride share tracking, and food delivery tracking tracking,” while inappropriate use “chat messages, warnings, incoming calendar events, and instant access to app features”.
Therefore, although media playback is not clearly allowed, it is not in line with Google’s “time -sensitive” model, which shows why the media style is not automatically promoted. It is a shame, because we think it would be a wonderful feature to show playback information on the status bar chip – and at least Samsung agrees. Hopefully, Google sees what its partners are doing and re -evaluate its status.
For those who want to try direct updates, you will need to install Android 16 Qpr1 beta on a compatible pixel device, as this feature is not active in a stable release. You will also need to find a support app like Google’s sample app. Developers interested in supporting direct updates can experience Google’s official documents and the latest alpha release of the Jet Pack Core Library.
