The company said Thursday that Red Wood Materials is re -developing old EV batteries in energy storage systems, which is “significantly less” than new storage projects.
Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling and Manufacturing Venture, which was founded by Tesla’s former chief technologist, has created a new division called Red Wood Energy to handle these projects. The purpose is to remove the “outdated but active” EV batter from the recycling stream and convert them into a “low -cost, massive” energy storage system that can help plug important gaps in the energy grid.
Red Wood says it receives more than 20 GWH batteries annually-which is equal to 250,000 EVs-which represents about 90 % of recycled lithium-ion batteries and battery materials in North America. And often, the batteries receiving for recycling still have the capacity of usable – up to 50 %. These are batteries that are no longer suitable for the power vehicle, but they still have a life that they can accomplish a purpose.
So instead of recycing active batteries, the Red Wood is turning them into a stationary storage system. And the company says it will be a growing opportunity as more EV batteries will reach the end of their age. The Redwood estimates that more than 100,000 EVs will come on the road this year.
After the battery pack retrieved, Red Woods engineers examine the diagnosis to determine if it is a suitable candidate for recovery or recycling. If it can be reused, the pack is installed in the “flexible, modular storage system” that can run freely or connect the grid. Redwood says its pipeline is reusable batteries more than “gigwat hours”, it is expected to increase to 5 GW in the coming year.
Redwood has already deployed its first micrograde that is running with advanced EV batteries. The grid, which has 12 MW of electricity and 63 MW capacity, is located on the company’s campus in Nevada and is being used to strengthen the 2,000 GPU modular data center for the AI ​​infrastructure company Croso. Redwood has called it “the largest life battery deployment in the world”, which has enough energy to power “9,000 houses, New York and Washington, DC support 20 Amtric visits, or receive EV for 240,000 miles travel. The Red Wood Materials was founded by JT Stroke in 2017.
