Slow and stable. When it comes to sovereign vehicles on the streets of the city, this has been the point of view in most countries of the world.
But on Tuesday, the UK announced that it would put a cautious foot on the pedal, when the Department of Transport said it would accelerate plans to allow companies to operate itself on public roads in limited pilot programs in next year’s spring. The British government initially planned to open its roads for self -run vehicles in the second half of 2027, more than a year.
“We can see what it offers a widespread economic opportunity for technology,” Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told Wired in an interview. The department estimates that the independent vehicle industry will generate 38,000 jobs and will generate £ 42 billion (US $ 57 million) for the country by 2035. The secretary also refers to better and more efficient travel options and road safety as a stimulus behind this country’s new timeline. She says, “We know how hard the companies are doing on safety issues, and we don’t want to wait for further development of this technology.”
Transport Department spokesman Marco Barbato says the pilot phase of deployment of sovereign vehicles in the country will include a limited number of vehicles, and the government will spend almost a year to study the data created by these vehicles. The purpose of the government is to allow companies to launch independent taxi services in the second half of 2027.
Nevertheless, British officials say they will prefer security. Alexander says, “We will not allow this technology to be deployed on our streets unless we are not sure that strict security tests have been fulfilled.”
The major transport players were shown to take advantage of the government’s announcement. British sovereign vehicles developer View and US Ride Hale’s Dev Dev Ober said on Tuesday that he would launch trials for autonomous vehicles on London roads and contribute to the government’s new plan.
London will be a difficult place to drive cars itself, says View CEO and Cofounder Alex Kendall. He says, “This is not Phoenix, Arizona-this is not a grid city in the desert where the sun is always shining.” (Vemo launches its own driving taxi service in Phoenix.) London, on the contrary, “the Middle Ages is a made environment. It has seven times more jewelery than San Francisco.” He says how to start services in London can lead to his independent leaning on how it can be sovereign. Kendel refused to say that when Uber and View could start their service.
