A recently published comparisoned meta -analysis provides potential answers for Apple Watch users who have questioned the accuracy of their activity color data. Researchers at the University of Mississippi reviewed 56 studies, which received Apple Watch’s performance measured and positive and warning indicators against medical grade devices.
Heart rate and phase counting

Let’s start with the good news first. According to the results, apple watches are very accurate when it comes to heart rate tracking and counting measures. This is based on our own experience with Apple Watches, including our Apple Watch Series 10 Review (Apple’s latest Smart Watch).
The average per cent error (MAPE) for these matrix (MAPE) for these matrix (MAPE) was only 4.43 % for heart rate and 8.17 % for phase counting-both of which are commonly used to describe excellent performance in consumer clothing.
Researchers also noted that the latest Apple Watch models performed well throughout the board. Although the study model does not explain the results of the model, doctorate students who say Pul Chu (one of the authors of the study):
Although we cannot say that every update is a big jump to move forward, there is a significant trend of gradual improvement over time. This shows that Apple is improving technology over time.
The calories burned is still a weak place
Smart watches are still not so good in calorie tracking, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use them to encourage them. | Photo by Fonina
But not all matrix scored so well. The study shows that energy costs estimates – alias how much calories you burn – was much less reliable. The average error rate here increased by 27.96 %, which contains errors in various activities, including walking, race, cycling, and high intensity exercise.
This makes the Apple Watch worth wearing other, as is the equivalent of a fit butt surge, which also struggles with calories estimates. It should not be surprising, however, measurement of burned calories is a very difficult task. There are all kinds of things like body weight, mobility type, metabolic performance, and even skin heads.
Smart Watchs often rely on common algorithms that combine heart rate data, sensors input, and user profile information to evaluate calorie burn. But this process makes a lot of error left. Other studies have revealed that in terms of device and activity, the calories about wear can be estimated from 40 % to 80 %.
The bottom line
For this matter – use Apple Watch – or any Smart Watch – as a guide, not the Gospel.
The study of the University of Mississippi provides a helpful fact: Apple watches are perfect for heart rate and phase counting, but should not be relied on for the exact calorie measurement. Personally, I find a smart watch very valuable as a way of logging in and monitoring consistency. Looking at your progress is a real excitement, whether it be a complete run graph or a series of active days. Without the pressure of statistics or matrix, you start to practice how your body feels at that moment – and sometimes, this is exactly the same exercise you need.
