Experts at Radboh University in the Netherlands and IMDEA Networks have found that Meta is detecting Android users’ web browsing activity without their knowledge or consent – even when users were in invisible mode or used VPNs.
As long as Android owners were logged into Meta’s apps like Instagram and Facebook, Meta was able to track them, click or buy users to see more personal advertising service.
Initially seen in January, apps were loading a script that sent data to other apps on the same device, mainly ignoring Android’s built -in security and privacy features.

A professor at the University of Redod found that Meta Pixel tracker (about 20 % of the popular websites) has been linked to Facebook and Instagram apps on an excellent Android phone. Instead of sending the information collected to Meta, it connected the Pixel Tracker to the cell phone apps and the user identification as registered in Facebook and Instagram, allowing the company to ignore security protection on Android devices.
The behavior happened on all major Android browsers, but Meta says it was stopped earlier this week. However, according to the Bionisary Port, Meta has been using this type of data only since September 2024.
Google responded by saying that companies that collected such sensitive figures are “using Android capabilities” unintentional ways that clearly violate our principles of security and privacy. ” He has also stated that he has implemented changes to reduce such unpleasant techniques, and has also started his investigation and is in direct contact with the parties involved.
Meta has confirmed that she is in touch with Google after issuing her statement. The company also confirmed that the tracking took place but ended earlier this week. Similarly, Meta also told Sky News that she would consider the issue and she was discussing Google with a “potentially wrong confrontation about the application of their policies”.
