Microsoft is now eliminating a guessing game known as some ‘Port Roulette’-when you are surprised that if you plug your monitor is ready for it. With Windows 11 version 24 H2, Microsoft is developing new rules related to all USB-C ports on WHCP-Certified laptops and tablets. Now, these ports will do exactly what you expect: charge, transfer data, and output video. Thankfully, this means you will not be surprised which USB-C port supports display port … or if your dock will charge your laptop-now make the USB-C really universal.
With a new update, Microsoft is updating its Windows hardware compatibility program, otherwise known as WHCP. It is a set of rules on which the device makers follow their laptop to obtain certification for Windows.
The new rules now order the optional USB-C characteristics and solve a problem that has been going on for a long time with USB-C globalization.
Although the USB-C is designed to become universal, the practice so far has shown otherwise. Basically, 27 % of the USB4 PC had warnings of “limited functionality” when people plugged into accessories that did not work as expected. But now, with this new update, it will change. Now, WHCP certified Windows 11 machines must meet three basic USB-C standards:
- Data Transfer – Machines should offer minimum USB 3.0 Speed (5GBPS)
- Charging – USB Power Delivery Support Need (equal or more on laptop, 4.5W, 7.5W on tablets)
- Display Output – Support for Display Port ALT mode, so each port may connect the monitor
It is minimal. Meanwhile, machines that are more expensive and support Thunderbolt or USB4 are even met with strict demands.
How’s it been so far
Let’s take a look at the current situation before this refreshing. Many of you may know that all USB-C ports do not do the same thing even though they look exactly the same: the same connector, the same shape, the same size …
The thing is, some ports handle charging, some support external display, some are eligible to get the speed of Thunderbolt … while others are completely incompetent.
And this mess is what Microsoft is addressing with a set of new rules. Basically, the type of USB-C connector is, and thunderbolt (and USB4) is the performance standards that use USB-C connectors. These standards include premium properties such as high -speed data transfer, support for dual monitor, and PCI tunneling for external GPU.
Laptop makers were allowed to advertise USB4 or Thunderbolt support if only one of the device’s USB-C ports could be offered, while the rest had limited functionality. The common man had no way to know which one is.
But then this new WHCP certification comes, which will no longer allow it. From now on, if a laptop is to advertise a thunderbolt or USB4 support, it should provide full package to all USB-C ports. And yes, no more guessing games, there will be no more reading labels or will not be plugged in the “wrong” port. Obviously, it would be a big step toward the initial focus of the USB-C: the globalization of the port.
Unfortunately, though, it’s not without cost. Naturally, the budget laptop maker who had previously survived the implementation of the USB-C with full features, now they have to spend more and get better processors. Of course, it can run prices in the budget section. Meanwhile, other makers can prefer chromosis, which do not have these rules.
Although many middle -range and premium machines actually meet or even exceed these new standards.
Microsoft is expecting a gradual change in the industry over the next few years. Brands such as Level, Dell, and HP are said to guide the new rules to adopt new rules.
All, despite not having a huge refreshing or shiny new feature, this change has a widespread impact on the standard of living of people using USB-C. It eliminates the game of ‘Port Roulette’, and wherever you ensure the plugin, you will have the same reliable, universal experience from your certified Windows laptop. Cudos to Microsoft for this change!
