This is the week of the Summer Game Fest, so I am mentally wrapped in a complex net of restrictions, meetings, schedules and secret invitations, and I can already smell plastic, clean air with video game conventions of all sizes. MMM is smelling like pixels.
This will be my third SGF and I look forward to it as usual. I appreciate the attention of the event on independent projects, diverse creators and small -scale publishers, especially with shows such as Day of the Dev, Healthy Direct, Women -led Games, and Latin American and Southeast Asian Games. I am deeply convinced that innovation in the industry is created from these unorganized, experimental places, and SGF has provided permanent scope for polishing such experiments.
I also appreciate the SGF after spending seven years in the grass halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center, which covers an electronic entertainment expo. E3 was interesting on its own and I have the honor that I attended it many times, but it was also a soulful show. The E3 was unwanted for independent creators and was full of corporate swigs, and when Sony decided to stop participating in 2019, it felt like an expensive, out -of -touch statement of the video game industry as a whole. The best parts of the E3 were unauthorized events organized by Davilor Digital in its last years, which were in the nearby parking lot full of air stream trailers, food trucks and exquisite, up and upcoming Indy Games. In fact, it felt a lot like SGF.
I wrote about this trend in 2018, in a story in which the video game industry needs E3. Probably because I am a sorceress but most of the outbreak, E3 closed in 2020 and it was never personally reproduced as a show. The Entertainment Software Association hosted a virtual session in 2021, but after that, nothing, and E3 was officially declared dead in December 2023. Meanwhile, the video game market is progressing, which operates at a strong indi, mobile play and tough crunch leaf cycle AAA level.
Now, ESA has returned with a new video game showcase, called the ICON, Interactive Innovation Conference, turning to Las Vegas in April 2026. The biggest names in the industry include Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Epic Games, Electronic Arts, Disney, Disney, Amazon and Tech to Interactive, and the show is “a place”, Perry Louis.
