A new study new shapes our point of view about the fall of classic Maya civilization. Although archaeological records have long suggested that a dramatic population falls about 1,200 years ago, new genetic evidence confirms that the people of Maya have never really disappeared. The study, published in the current biology, analyzed the genomes of seven ancient people in the ancient city of Coupon, which is an important center in the world of the classic Maya, below Western Honduras. The results highlight a strong thread of genetic continuity from late archeology to the modern population of Maya, which offers new insights about migration, elite integration, and sustainable legacy of Maya civilization.
Copan’s cultural fusion
According to the study, Copean was first settled by the smaller farming communities during the initial precondition period (before 1000 BCE). Memorial architecture and sophisticated Shalaliyah indicate that the city became an important Maya Center for the early classic period (300-400 CE). In 426/427, a royal family began when an outdoor man, Kenx Coke ‘Mo’, who had power, an event that was endorsed by both epigraphic and genomic evidence. Genetic data shows that he, and others in the elite class, possibly came from the population of the Highland Mexico, such as near Chechen Atz.
Archaeological and historical records have long suggested that the elite Maya immigrants married local non -Mia populations to establish the state. A new genetic study supports this theory. Researchers received strong genetic continuity from late archaeological era to modern Maya groups, as well as 6 % of genes flow from the Highland Mexican population, identifying regional integration and elite movement.
Falling and continuing
The DNA analysis of the study reveals that the genetic continuity remains intact, despite a huge decline in the population of Kapan around the beginning of 750 CE. This shows that the local population remained even when the elite structures continued to fall.
The traditional statement described the elimination of Maya as a mysterious disappearance. But this study shows that the people of Maya did not end suddenly, but they reorganized their identities, migration and their identity.
