WhatsApp tests username feature
Meanwhile, as Wabitinpho reported, WhatsApp was found to develop a new feature that allows users to select the username as an alternative to sharing phone numbers to start the conversation. This functionality can allow users to enter a unique username in future updates. It was seen in the development of WhatsApp beta 25.17.10.70 for iOS smartphones and is currently available on the test flight app.
Usernames can contain letter characters and special characters. It should not start with “www”. Or finish with a domain like “.com” or “.Net”. The character length can be determined between 3 and 30 characters. Once the username is fixed, it will appear for others who look for it, and allow them to start chats without the need for the user’s phone number. However, the current contacts that have the phone number will continue to be seen. The purpose of this feature is to enhance the privacy of the user.
