Several years after the Federal Trade Commission tried to prosecute Meta to prevent the acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp, the trial that will form its future continues. The trial began last month when CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the stand, and is expected to continue for several weeks.
Facebook’s 2012 acquisition of Instagram is the central part of the FTC case against Meta. The government says Zuckerberg bought Instagram to neutralize it as a competitor. When Kevin Sistrom, a former CEO of Instagram and former CEO, took the stand, he did not defend the move. While Zuckerberg testified that Meta had helped Instagram grow, Sistom testified that Zuckerberg saw Instagram as a “threat” to Facebook development and deliberately stopped the company’s resources.
Further, Facebook’s decision to pay Billion 1 billion for Instagram – an app that does not have income and only a handful of employees – looked like incredible money. Shrill Sandberg believed that Zuckerberg had made excessive payment for Instagram. In a exchange between the two since 2012, he said, “Yes, of course it is too much.”
