Just when it seemed Apple had a Hands full of various challenges, the company now faces another legal battle. A group of app developers has filed a class action case, stating that Apple is not following a court order on how the payments are handled in the apps. Legal fodder, Advanced on 2 May 2025Apple claims that developers have prevented developers from using frightened texts to show users’ payment options out of their App Store and punish those who do so. They say, that is, Apple can continue to collect its commission fees.
What about a fight?
In this new legal case, the main problem is the longer rule of Apple’s deduction, usually 30 %, from the items purchased within the apps and subscriptions. Apple reduced it in 2020 to developers that earn less than 1 million in a year. However, many developers still want to use other methods of payment to avoid these fees or to exempt their customers. Law firm Hagen Berman Launched the Class Action Suite, with a company called pure sweat basketball, Inc., as central plaintiffs. They argue that Apple’s actions have hurt the developers. Hagens Berman said that more than 100,000 developers may have to pay Apple commissions that Apple should not have received because they cannot take users to their payment pages.

A familiar struggle for app stores
This is the latest part of the ongoing fight, which includes the aforementioned epic game against Apple’s App Store rules. Epic Games along with Google’s Play Store are facing similar problems, which proves that these battles show a major debate in the world how much control is controlled by big companies on their own app stores. Developers want more freedom and a better part of money, while companies like Apple say their stores notice safety, a good user experience, and support developers. In other parts of the world, the rules are changing. For example, Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is changing companies like Apple to change the rules of their App Store, such as allowing other app stores and payment systems. Although this American case is different, it shows that developers are pushing for even more openness here. However, Apple has always defended its App Store model, saying it is safe and valuable to consumers and developers.
In both the United States and other countries, Apple will change how these issues are dealt with, possibly selling mobile apps and how the developers make money. It also compels to think that Freedom Developers are looking to run their businesses than these major platforms.
