Google Maps was mainly designed for the inner city trip, where the roads are well marked and relatively smooth. I suspect that the developers of the app have imagined users taking the gravel roads in the hearts of South Africa. So, it is not surprising that once you hit the dirt, the app becomes very useful. However, where the Google Maps fall short, the Asmand Excels.

The Utmand is a free, open source app on the Play Store and F -drod. It draws data from various sources, mainly relying on open street maps, which maintain volunteers with local knowledge worldwide. This gives it a wider coverage of less well -known routes that often ignore Google maps, when things get dust, give Asmand an important advantage.

Can the country’s streets take me home?

Although I travel rarely beyond the streets of my high clearance, front wheel drive car, there have also come a time when I need to take a short cut. In small cities, often the single smooth road is blocked inside and out, forcing me to choose an alternative, the Disturb Route. In these situations, I want to know the road level and its length conditions to find out what to be expected. Most of the parts for i’D, I will refrain from situations where I could possibly need to get out of the fuel or damage my car.

Google Maps assumes that every path is worthy, and the UI does not suggest otherwise.

Google Maps assumes that every path is worthy, at least as far as its UI is concerned. It does a poor job to highlight gravel routes, which is especially a matter of concern in my region. Many important routes are unhealthy, while some are commonly known as the tire killer. To avoid them, I need more information when the washed track is encountered.

Although the Google Maps fail in this regard, the smoke shines. Using map styles options, I can show the road level and ease data on my Android auto screen, which gives valuable insights to the challenges of the path. If a small path contains sand or mud, I can consider taking a long, safe way. It also highlights whether the smooth Asphalt Road becomes more treacherous track.

On the stomach, each level type is colorful, and the softening of the road is indicated by line styling. It is easy to distinguish between targeted roads, gravel roads, unbearable mud trails, or stone or grass roads. I use the touring map style to show this information.

The assemble shows the road surface and easily on my Android auto display.

Although planning all this data or looking at the map from a short distance may be guilty, the benefits are much higher than the defects.

Prioritize other map styles, such as off -road, 4 × 4 trails if you spend most of your time on dirt. Overleys are also available, and my favorite is the slope, which shows the inclination or lack of an area. Deep red, climbing. When using the touring map style, I can guess how much the road is standing.

    No hint? No harm

Delitting with various map styles and extensive data sets of Usman is supported by its offline map. When traveling these routes, there is no guarantee of cell coverage. Although you can download offline maps for Google Maps, the data is limited. I feel stupid that Google restricts the content downloading in the area shown on the screen rather than the entire region. When service is a problem, it becomes a better choice, becoming a problem.

Utmand supports offline map download for the entire regions (and even if you are so inclined, the sea).

You can download maps for any region or country as well as road out of road. Like a boat ride during your adventure? The sky also offers sea map.

If you are traveling with friends who have recorded a path, you can import and display data from the Asmand KML or GPX files. It is useful for hiking and operating non -standard paths. The Google Maps app does not support GPX imports directly from its interface.

The assemand is excellent except for where it is not

As you might tell, I’m a fan of heaven. This is one of the few apps that I have no objection to paying annual subscriptions, at least to unlock its Android auto support. However, the app is not without its problems. As much as I prefer it to remove Google’s maps from the highway, sky is one of the disappointing apps I have ever used.

Let’s start with its customs options. Although it offers a wide range of map styles, overlays and detailed data, users have to edit XML files to make smaller adjustments than stock map style. For example, if I want the touring map style only displaying levels of surface for non -Asphalt routes, I have to recover its XML file, find the line I want to edit, and save it in the he Asmand data folder, which is hidden in Android/data. If I do not like change, I am forced to repeat this process. This can be determined with the GUI map style editor, which allows users to see changes in real time.

As much as I like heaven, some of his shortcomings take me above the wall.

It is also worth the use of baseline data osmond. Although the Open Street Map offers clear benefits, it lacks some of the best features of Google Maps. Although the asset shows the points of interest, it is almost useless to see detailed information. For example, Google Maps can show the camping spott Times, reviews and images, while the sky can only indicate its presence.

Rita El Khuri / Android Authority

Then there are the sky search skills, which is yellow than Google. Maps generally know where I want to go, even if it sometimes misleads me. Heaven does not offer the same health only through his search bar.

The app performance on Android Auto is more disappointing. The asset is extremely customized, but the app slowly increases your data. Even my relative modern modern Galaxy S24 FE is struggling to rail the map -making data on my car screen, while some map views are slow on the phone.

The Ottoman is full of compromises. The list is wide, and many aspects are more difficult to use. But I don’t want to live without it on the road travel, especially if I was surprised by the mountains. There is room for improvement, and I do not doubt that developers will address the concerns of most of them and other users in the future version. However, if you are planning an adventure soon, consider adding heaven to your device as well.
