- A Twitter user has shown that the Galaxy Z Fold is thinner than 7 Honor Magic V5.
- Both honors and Oppo measure their foldable without a protective internal screen film.
- Taking a keen eye on the product pages also shows that some brands do not add these layers when weighing their foldable.
Honor launched the magic V5 in China earlier this month, and the company claims that the white version was the world’s thin foldable phone at 8.8 mm. However, recent events have brought this claim into question.
Experienced Ice Universe created a series of Twitter posts in which Honor Magic V5 compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Posts have strongly suggested that the Samsung Foldable is slightly thinner to the world’s thin foldable. The ice universe used a paper card, a ball, and a measuring device to show that the Galaxy phone is seemingly thin.
There is no accurate measurement tool, but we can still conclude a harsh conclusion: Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the world’s most thin folding mobile phone.

This shows that the Honor website has a list of a curious measurement method, as it measures its foldable phones without internal and external protective screen films. This is an objectionable method of measurement, as the purpose of consumers is not to remove the internal film on foldable phones. This layer is effectively a permanent part of the phone, which should only be removed by repair agents. We also tested the former Honor’s former foldable listings, and the company used this measurement method as a magic V2. The company claimed that the magic V2 was the most thin book -style foldable phone, which falls under the centimeter thick (9.9 mm).
We asked honors to comment on Twitter user claims:
Overall thickness does not include internal and external screen protective films and camera raised part. This method of measurement is not unique to honor.
Honor sent us photos (seen below) which he briefly posted online. These images show that the folded device measures 8.8 mm. However, the company confirmed Android Authority That he removed the external protective film for these images and measurements. This is a understandable warning because unlike the internal film, consumers can remove the external film first. The company added that there is no “need” to remove the internal film for these pairing measurements.
This surprises us why the Honor website claims that 8.8 mm measurements do not exclude security films on both screens. Nevertheless, if the Honor got 8.8 mm thickness, including these layers, it would be a success that screams about it. It is also worth noting that we do not take a look at the inner screen in these pictures to confirm that the protective film is intact, so we have to take the word for it.
What about other manufacturers?

When our honor told us that it was not the only one to use this measurement method. After eliminating the list of products, we discovered that Oppo had removed the screen protector for its Oppo Find N5 (viewed above). It is believed that the fold is 8.93 mm thick.
We asked Samsung how it measures foldable phones, and we are still waiting for the answer. However, the company’s newsroom website notes the following:
When the Galaxy Z Fold 7 thickness is measured when the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is measured from top of glasses.
I am estimating that the company, which is measuring the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in the rear glass cover from the core screen. We have asked Samsung to clarify this statement.
Meanwhile, Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold Product Listing only stated that the phone measurement “camera bumping is not included.” This shows that Google has added screen proteins to its measurement.
How does Xiomi measure your foldable phones? The company told us this is:
Xiaomi adheres to the standard of the industry how the thickness of foldable devices is measured.
The biggest problem with this reaction is that it seems that not a single industry standard for measuring foldable phones. We asked the company to clarify its response, but it did not return to us.
We also asked Huawei about how to measure foldable phones, but it did not return to us. However, the Huawei Met X6 product page notes that “the appearance of a camera module does not include the appearance of the camera module.” Finally, we asked Vivo about their methodology to measure the thickness of the foldable phone, but we are still waiting for the answer.
It does not end with foldable phone thickness

Measurement methods are not limited to thickness. Taking a keen eye on various product pages shows that some manufacturers are also turning the truth about the weight of their foldable.
The Honor Magic V5 Product Listing has confirmed that the white model’s 217 grams of weighing 217 grams was obtained without adding an internal protective film. Oppo Find N5 Fine Print also shows that it did not include 229 grams of internal screen protector.
Meanwhile, Vivo X Folds 5 (217 grams) and Huawei Met X6 (239 grams) product pages suggest that these foldable weights were done without internal or external protective films. Once again, we can understand the outdoor movie, but the internal film is not able to finish the user. The list of Samsung and Google products does not explain these details.
Although, why is it all a great thing?

You may wonder why we care about 0.1 mm or similar negative differences. However, it can be claimed among the smartphone maker that it has the world’s thin foldable phone and… no. However, Honor claims that the V5 is the world’s thin foldable phone that is at a difference of 0.1 mm.
Using the measurement method that potentially teases your own device is a objectionable marketing tactic. This may allow the brands to claim that they may not otherwise do with more traditional measurements. In the case of Honor, the company told us that its measurement continues even when the internal screen film is included. However, it only raises more questions as to why it does not last more in the first place of traditional measurement methods.
In any case, it is clear that some foldable phone makers are playing fast and loose while measureing their devices. Honor and Oppo measurement methods, in particular, guarantee a bit of chinching salt. Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s reaction also makes me doubts about their measurements. The problem will potentially return to the spotlight only when Apple eventually released a foldable iPhone on its rumors.
This is not the first time we have seen objectionable tactics of smartphone brands in the name of marketing. Some tactics of the years include benchmark fraud, promoting meaningless matrix (such as 100x zoom), and “smartphone camera samples” taken by DSLR cameras. However, the threat of this latest resort further worsens user confidence in the claims of a smartphone maker.
