A Dutch woman has challenged a $ 500 traffic penalty after the automated camera was used to flag on an automatic camera for using the phone behind the wheel. The incident took place on July 2 in the city of S. Hartjin Bush, when the woman, identified as Flortagi, was running home after a dental procedure. Florteja had just passed through the teeth and she was using an ice pack to reduce swelling on her cheek. According to an interview with the Dutch Outlet Omrop Brant, he was surprised to find a 439 euro fined (about $ 500)) released in the name of his boyfriend. Since he recently borrowed his car, he immediately checked the notice and was surprised by the allegations.
When I opened the fine, I was surprised: 439 euros!

Violation claims that they have an “electronic mobile device” while driving. But Flortez insists that what was in his hand was not a phone, but an ice pack. Increasing the irony, he remembered at the police car at the time and hoped that he would not make a mistake in using the phone.
The officers did not stop it, but the automatic traffic camera was apparently thought. Fortunately, Flortage was able to get the image used as evidence. Once he reviewed it, he was glad to see that his original phone was shown in front of him sitting in a holder in front of him – and the ice pack in his hand was much larger than any ordinary mobile device.
He shared the incident on Instagram, where his friends also felt the situation. But Flottej is not letting him go:
Me and my boyfriend had a good laugh about it. Everyone is telling me that I should fight it. And I’m going. I think I’m going to win it.

Such misconceptions are not new. In 2021, a British man named David Knight was fined after his license plate “KN19T”, which was walking with a woman wearing a shirt read “nutter”. As a person has personally received the wrong ticket due to the problem of a wrong license plate, I understand the disappointment. In my case, once the problem was resolved when it was clear that the car in the picture showed nothing like me. These events highlight the limits of automation in the implementation. There are mistakes, and often the human eye is needed to correct them.
For Flortage, the next step is to see if Dutch officials accept its explanation and give up a fine.
