Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Methane tracking satellite, which has the support of the Bezos Earth Fund, has lost methanees in space. Its ground team lost contact with the spacecraft on June 20, but tried to re -establish a connection until it was not known on the morning of July 1st that methanees had completely lost power. The team believes the satellite is not likely to be recovered. Matthews collected data about methane emissions, which were irreparable in an attempt to tackle climate change. Methane is the second largest partner in global warming after carbon dioxide, which is the largest source of agriculture, foam fuel and waste.
In its announcement, the Matthews team said that the observations of the spacecraft have provided us with critical insights about the distribution and volume of methane released from oil and gas production areas. Thanks to the satellite, scientists have also developed the ability to “translate space from space and translate them into methane volumes.” This knowledge can be used in future missions.
The EDF developed a mission launched in March 2024, to hold countries that had previously promised to account for the emission of their methane. It created a Google Cloud algorithm to calculate and monitor the methane in some areas organized by Harvard and Smithsonian scientists. Although the satellite itself is over, the Matthews team, along with other scientists, have vowed to work to take advantage of the algorithm and software created for the project. Team Satellite will also continue to process the data sent.
