Google has developed a new update for the photo app, which improves how both HDR and SDR images are edited. The goal is to help users keep their images more and more detail, especially when editing images taken in high dynamic boundaries.

The photos shot in the HDR now maintain their full dynamic range and HDR metadata, even after using the edit tools such as photoshobers, magic eraser, or portrait lights. This means that the opposite and the brightness in the picture should still look correct after the edit, which has not always been the case.

Google is also adding a new tool called “Ultra HDR”, which helps users control how bright the image appears. At the same time, the name of the previous “HDR” slider has been renamed, which, on the contrary, better describes its role in adjusting the exposure. The modification process in these changes should be made clear to users who want to fix their photos.

One of the most notable changes is the ability to increase images of SDR (standard dynamic range) that can look more like HDR. This feature uses machining learning to increase the highlights, vice versa, and improve the overall explanation of older images or those that have not actually been taken to HDR. Although it does not convert them to real HDR files, the result is designed to look more pronounced on synchronous screens.

When comparing it to the photo app on iOS, Google’s view offers more manual control. On iPhones, HDR processing is followed by limited amendment tools automatically. Apple secures HDR metad data, but does not allow users to convert SDR to HDR or adjust the HDR photo form to the same extent. In this regard, Google’s update gives users more flexibility to display their images.

This improvement follows the wider trend of AI use in mobile photo editing, especially on pixel devices. Although some features like the magic editor aim to make major changes to an image, it is more about keeping the image quality permanent after the HDR update minor amendments.

In my opinion, this update has added more options, which has changed how the app works in its basic part. Some consumers may need time to make the designated tools habit, but the HDR -capable display people, these improvements may make a significant difference in how to look after photo editing.
