After giving Gemini a very essential design refresh at the end of last year, Google is now developing a similar compact overlay for Gemini Live. We have seen it in the latest Google app beta update and enabled it before the official rollout to give you an initial shape.

Starting direct conversation with Gemini’s Overley, currently opens the full screen Gemini’s direct experience. Although you can reduce the interface from a permanent notification and use shortcuts in notification to prevent or eliminate conversation, there is currently no way to start conversation without opening a full screen interface. Google can soon convert it with a new compact overlay for Gemini Live.
We have seen this upcoming Overley in the latest Google app beta release and manually activated it before the official rollout. As you can see in the attached screenshots, it resembles the existing Gemini Overley and provides you with access to all four shortcuts available in the full screen gym direct interface. It also shows similar background animation during the ongoing conversation and offers shortcuts to end or resume conversation when Gemini is in grip.
Thanks to this over, you will soon be able to start a direct conversation with Gemini Overley without opening a full screen interface. Overley even allows you to use screen sharing options without a full screen, but video mode still opens the full screen interface. Although this is not direct Live of Live users in the current beta release, you can practically view the new Gemini Live Overley in the connected video. The clip also shows how the Overley will minimize the Gemini button, which you can tap to bring it back.
Given that the new Overley appears to be fully active in its current state, we expect Google to eliminate it soon. We will update this post as soon as it is available.
