Samsung Galaxy Z Folds receives 7 QI 2.1 certification

Wireless Power Consortium (Qi Wireless Charging Standard Stewards) confirmed the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 – it formally supports QI 2.1. However, the WPC is getting some information here.

For one, the device only supports the basic power profile (BPP) at 5W, which is certainly not. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has been listed as supporting the expansion power profile (EPP) at 15W and we expect the sequel will do at least so much.

QI 2.1 introduces new profiles related to cases – increased magnetic core power (MCPE) and magnetic core power magnet (MCPM). Yes, both say “magnetic” and both have magnets, but they are different. MCPM is for the phone which is made of magnets – in this case extra “feed throw” magnets are used to enhance the magnetic field for a strong attachment. MCPE is for PPP and EPP phones (without magnets) and allows them to work in a magnetic power profile (MPP) mode, namely the QI magnet version.

    Certification for Qi 2.1 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 (SMD 637 U)

Sorry for the alphabet soup, but the WPC is not helping the situation through its confused profiles. However, the page does not list anything above the BPP for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is not clearly accurate.

If you are wondering what is with the “SM-D637u” model number, it seems that WPC does not use Samsung’s standard positions. For example, Z Fold 6 is “SC 555 E”, Z Fold Special Edition is “SMD 269N” and Z Fold 5 “SMD 617s”, none of them meets Samsung’s “SM-F” model numbers for its foldables.

The image of a “coming soon” on the page makes it clear that it is incomplete. But we do not expect Samsung to adopt a full magnet experience with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 – it is more likely that it will follow the Galaxy S25 strategy with magnet issues. Such cases use the MCPE profile, for example, like this spagher case.
