Uperfect enters a whole new category of display panels with the Ucolor T3. It blurs the previously clear line between a desktop-class monitor and a portable monitor, creating a display that can truly be used by anyone.

It’s a 23.8-inch 4K matte panel, big enough for a desktop display. What makes this panel particularly interesting is that it’s as thin as a tablet and is powered by a single USB-C port, rather than requiring a USB-C cable and a separate AC power cable to connect to a computer.

Having tested many of the portable monitors around, including several from Upright, I can tell you that it’s not the easiest to get up and running quickly enough. But you can easily take it on the road, perhaps to a temporary workplace, errand, or business trip where you need more screen space than your laptop allows. Regardless of the reason, if you need a monitor for whatever reason, but a traditional monitor just won’t work for you, you don’t have to decide. You can get a full-sized, 4K-resolution panel that you can take anywhere.

The Ucolor T3 is currently on sale direct from uperfect’s site for £10,510 / £386 (and it’s discounted to £10,410 / £311 at the time of review). I also see it being sold by online retailers for the same price.

uperfect ucolor T3: unboxing and first impressions

This unboxing didn’t feel like a monitor. It felt like a laptop. I pulled out the 24-inch display, wrapped it in protective material, and then pulled out two USB-C cables, an HDMI cable, a power adapter, and a manual. I chose not to get the mount itself, although if I had it would have come in a separate box. The carrying case feels more like a laptop sleeve or display board case than a monitor case.

Then again, I’ve never had a portable monitor this size, so it’s probably normal. In portable monitor fashion, setup is pretty straightforward: plug in an HDMI cable if you have a USB-C device, or if you’re going with HDMI. Then a USB-C for power as well, since power isn’t transferred between the device and the monitor via HDMI.

Right off the bat, I was genuinely surprised by its size. Even with my 14- and 16-inch laptops, this thing felt huge. I plugged in my iPad mini 7 just for kicks and specs and was amazed at the size difference.

One thing I like about this panel is the matte display. Personally, I’m a fish for a good matte screen. I’ve always kept a paper-like screen protector on my beloved iPads, even when my iPad Pro was my only device for a few years. And, if money were no object, I’d get the matte display on my 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro. Because of that love, I really appreciate the matte finish on this portable monitor. I also like that this monitor bends the rules of what makes a “portable” monitor.

Yes, it’s more portable than my monitor, rigged with my monobloc, monitor arms, BenQ light bars, and webcam, but it still won’t fit in my big organic backpack either. The display can be powered by a single USB-C cable to your host device, but it will also need its own carrying case or ridiculously large bag to transport safely when in use. So, maybe even the term “portable” needs some translation. Or, has the unit gone too far?

uperfect ucolor T3: design and build quality

When it comes to the overall design and finish, Upperfact has ensured a product that looks high-end but still meets everyday needs. It’s not a display you’d feel bad bringing out of the office or your home, but it’s also one that looks good enough to use for a presentation with your boss or a client you’re trying to impress.

The bezels are sleek, the display is sharp, though I wish it was a bit brighter, and the stand juts out of the frame, feeling like a bonus feature every time. For setup you want to be elevated with a desk arm or an office chair.

Another unique option would be to use a similar mounting bracket to mount a mini PC on the back of this monitor, and then run the USB-C directly into the computer, essentially making it so you can have a full blown desktop with a single cable power system, and it can be very portable. Especially if the machine is something like the M-series Mac mini, which offers unreal power, is reasonably cheap, and is portable in its own right. You can even get a portable power station and run on the go.

    Eyeglasses

    Display: 23.8 in IPS, 3840 × 2160 (4K)
    Refresh rate: 60Hz
    Agreement ratio: 1000: 1
    finish: Matte anti-glare
    Brightness: 350 cd/m2
Ports: USB-C (Power + DP Alt Mode), HDMI, 3.5mm audio out
    Growing: 75 × 75 mm hole
Standing: Built in adjustable tilt stand
    strength: USB-C
    weight: 9 1.92 kg / 4.23 lbs (approx.)

Been using it for the past few months, been great. It’s not used every day, but my team and I have taken it out time and time again to test the machines, to work in different locations. I grabbed it and brought it to the coffee shop, even though it was weird, and I’ve used it as an additional display for existing workspaces.

One of my favorite setups I used for this monitor was mounting it on a monitor arm, then placing the display under it at an angle of about 60 degrees, like a laptop display. I love this look when I’m working with a laptop, so having a portable display that gives me the same look and feel as my desktop is great.

This display would also be great for those in the IT world who need to physically plug into server rooms, run tests on repair cart machines, or similar needs. It’s large but portable, making it a great display for a unique or otherwise grand scene.

uperfect ucolor T3: The final verdict

(Image credit: Colin Probst // Future)

The Uperfect ucolor T3 best lives in the gray area between a portable monitor and a standard desktop monitor. It’s not stationary and hard to move like standard displays, and it’s not too small like most portable displays.

While it doesn’t get super bright, which is a shame, the colors are great, the matte display cuts down on glare, and the portability and usability at this size is fantastic. For those niche use cases, this is an amazing option.

Ucular T3 delivers stunning 4K sharpness and premium content in a semi-portable format. It narrows down the portable and desktop category perfectly for those who travel occasionally but still need a large, accurate display. It’s not ultra-bright or light, but for workspace flexibility and clarity, it’s an easy recommendation.
