Who knew Taylor Sheridan’s Titan tenure at Paramount would be such a disaster for Netflix? Well, just about everyone else — and the new Western series give up Totally proves it.
Let’s set the scene. Instead of the usual Kevin Costner-style male-dominated environment, two married couples rule this version of the Wild West. Wealthy tyrant Constance Van Ness (Glenn Anderson) rules the town of the City of Angels with an iron fist, determined to control every last inch of it.
This is abandoned by Netflix’s out-of-control environment
look
If a mainstreamer or broadcaster releases a Western these days, we watch it with intense scrutiny. A decade ago, no one would have batted an eyelid, but the genre has been revived by the partnership of Sheridan and Paramount. While he continues to do drugs on smash shows, it doesn’t really leave room for anyone else.
For Netflix, this means that any content that isn’t an automatic breakout hit is likely to be forgotten, and I think that lack falls into that category. Such new western romance shows have been more successful Ransom Valleyand I think that if a streamer wants to be an industry leader in this genre, they should direct their efforts.
It makes this sound give up Absolutely horrible, and it’s nothing. However, it doesn’t stray far from “fine”. Every element of its build is solid and delivers what it needs, but extraordinary? Memorable? I’m not so sure about that.
Part of the problem is due to how the main story begins. In Episode 1, we’re thrown into a number of plots that aren’t properly explained — and I don’t mean that we should naturally be kept in suspense like a murder mystery.
As an example, Fiona comes from Ireland and has managed to abandon a found family over the course of a few years. How she got to America, and how they all found each other, quickly becomes incriminating.
I’m all for “show don’t,” but I need enough understanding to sink my teeth into the Western illusion. Instead, I’m walking around like a bystander caught in the middle of a gunslinging duel. This effect continues throughout the series, and it’s not surprising that the perks keep binging.
Glenn Anderson and Lena Headey’s mother is downstairs
However, it’s not all doom and gloom – let’s do our favorite thing in the world and talk about Glenn Anderson. I don’t think it’s the best role of the year (which it will be). Insolence on Channel 4 in the UK), but she never performs poorly. Obviously, because he’s Glenn Anderson.
Constance Van Ness is everything you want in an archetypal villain, and she’s calculated, cold, and cruel in every decision she makes. She’s quite literally on her high horse here, metaphorically (and sometimes physically) kicking anyone and everyone who dares get in her way. For a Glenn Anderson fan, it’s everything you could possibly want, and I see new YouTube fan edits in his future.
Of course, Lena is not far behind Heidi Anderson. Fiona is as tough as she is decisive, almost single-handedly driving the plot forward with alarming hints and turning points. At the same time, he is guarded and funny, and the desire to know more about him becomes overwhelming. Scenes between the two are actually few and far between, but when they do happen, they are golden.
Obviously, these two automatically carry more weight than anything else, but well said give up It rests entirely on their shoulders. Their ensemble cast is strong, and the beauty of the ranch, Angel Ridge, and natural countryside are almost all characters in their own right.
I don’t think the new Netflix western will be the most satisfying TV binge this December, but you won’t be wasting your time watching either. It’s definitely a budget version of The Taylor Sheridan Show (metaphorically speaking, not in production value), but if you’re a fan of our leading ladies, give up There is a slam dunk.

The best TV for all budgets
