As I explain below, you can’t play PS5 games from an external drive – but you can use to store any game you are not playing right now, including old PS4 games.
One of my favorite portable drives is Samsung T7. It can write files at a speeding 1,000 MB/second. If you intend to use home use specially, you can save money by buying regular models instead of a variety of wear shields. I’ve been using T7 drives to store my photos, music and sports for years, and they have not yet failed me to fail me. The latest model, Samsung T9, is proud to read/write speed up to 2,000MB/s.

How do we test PS5 SSD
I have experienced most of the SSD recommended in this list, either PS5 or computer use. I also bought and used my top choice in my PS5.

How many PS5 storage do I need?
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 can accept internal drives with storage capacity between 250GB and 8TB. If you already own PS5, there is a possibility that you have a reasonable idea of how much storage you need for your game library. If you are buying SSD with a new PS5 or PS5 Pro, or buying for someone else, it is more difficult to tell what you need a high performance experience.
The PS5 game average is smaller than their PS4 equals, usually between 30 GB and 100 GB, with some remarkable (and very popular) exceptions. If you are a fan of the Call of Duty Series, install Black OPS 6 And Warzone 2.0 Can eat up to 240GB. In other words, installing a complete call -off duty will take more than one -third of PS5’s internal storage. If you are not a fan of the Covenant, the chances are that you will be good to store between six and 10 games on regular PS5, both internally before running into problems.
You also need to consider your internet speed. If you live in an area with a lazy broadband, “you can download it again” rationality doesn’t really work. In my old home, a 100 GB download took me eight hours, it was difficult to say, or to publish articles about upgrading the PS5 SSD at the same time, it was difficult to say. Keeping sports on off -off occasion you want to play them at some point.

Far from the bat, basically has no point in going for 250GB PS5 SSD. Economically, 250 GB drives are not cheaper than 500 GB – and in practice, this is not really a lot of space to live in modern sports. 500 GB drives may prove to be a decent option, but after low prices, I think the sweet position for most people is to choose a high capacity 1TB or 2TB drive, which you should run for a maximum of $ 200. The latter will double the storage of PS5 Pro without breaking the bank.
Unless you make cash and want to flex, 4TB and 8TB models should be mostly avoided, as you will eliminate more gigabyte payments with a 1TB or 2TB drive.
While 825GB PS5 provides only 667GB storage, the main reason for this is the operating system and the storage for catching. If you install the 1TB PS5 SSD, you will have 1TB storage available for sports, in a margin of error. Out of the box, PS5 offers 1.86TB storage for pro games, though you can do more and more if you delete the pre -installed estrow playroom (GASP).
Since neither the PS5 is Salem nor the PS5 Pro feature update CPU architecture, all our recommendations will work with the PS5 model you have.
Can you play PS5 games on the outdoor SSD?
External hard drives cost less than internal SSD counterparts (and a good chance that you may already own your own). Unfortunately, there are restrictions on what you can do with them. The external SSD is connected to your PS5 through USB, and is just suitable for playing PlayStation 4 games, or storing PS5 titles. If you have something other than the high -speed Internet, it’s useful. It is faster to move the PS5 game out of “cold storage” on an outer drive. It has to be downloaded more than it is-or want to keep your PS4 library.
Due to the limits here, you do not need a high performing model, though you should choose more SSD than HDD for better speed and load times of transfer. Any prominent portable drive of a well -known brand will drive, which we have tried and recommend as the main X9 Pro and Samsung T7 options.
Which SSD card is compatible with PS5?
The official answer to this question is a “M.2 Socket 3 (Key M) Gen4 X4 NVME SSD.” But even within this seemingly specific explanation, there are additional factors to consider. The important requirements that Sony has for compatibility decreases in speed, cooling and physical dimensions.
For speed, Sony says drives should be able to handle the sequence reading at 5,500MB/s. Preliminary testing shows that PS5 will accept drives slowly like 4,800MB/s, and the game that regularly taps in the SSD. Rachit and Clinic: Rift separated – There will be no problem. The only thing that PS5 will reject is one that is not similar to the Gen4 X4 SPEC.
In our opinion, though, the use of the drive slowly compared to the specification is a threat that, if you already do not have this drive, is not able to take it. Just because we have not yet received problems, it does not mean that there will not be games that may be worried in the future. The price difference between these slightly slow Gen4 drives and the Sony’s speculation is not too big, and you can cover all your bases as well.
The speed is slightly more complex and size. Most new SSDs are going to be fine. PS5 can be practically fit any length (30 mm, 40 mm, 60 mm, 80 mm or 110 mm, to be precise) 22 mm wide SSD fit. The majority of the drives you receive will be 22 mm wide and 80 mm long, so there is no problem.
It should be noted that the system may fit a 25 mm wide drive, but the width must include cooling solutions. Talking about this, Sony says the SSD “needs effective heat consumption with the cooling structure, such as a hat sink.” The maximum height with the Sony slot is 11.25 mm, of which only 2.45 mm drive can be “down”.
Earlier, that meant that the storage extension of PS5, including Karser’s MP 600 Pro LP, would not fit into the slot. Since the first time this guide was published in 2021, most of the NVME makers, including Samsung, have emerged with a specific model of the PlayStation that meets these requirements. That said, if you want to save some money, naked drives are often cheap and it is normal to find a cool solution that will work for PS5.
The only component of the NVME SSD that really needs cooling is a controller, which will find a (very small) stack without joy without a sink. Most SSD only has chips on one side, but even on double -sided SSDS, the controller will be at the top, because manufacturers know that the heat needs to be placed there to better eliminate it.
Therefore, move towards the seller of your PC component of choice and basically select anything that meets the recommended dimensions. A good search term is “laptop NVME heat sink”, as it will be designed to fit into the gaming laptop limits, which are more bound to PS5. They are usually cheaper than those labeled “PS5 heat synchronization”.
One recommendation is the $ 6 copper hat sink, which is associated with the thermal interface material sticky from PS5 SSD. It works exactly, and in testing stress on a PC, we could not find any metal that could not control the temperature. When you are looking for, just make sure you do not take steps for the solution you go for, 25 mm wide or 8 mm tall (including thermal interface material) and has an easy installation method that causes no headache.
One last thing: When buying PS5 NVME, there is no reason to buy a Gen5 model on the more affordable Gen4 model. As matters stand, Sony’s console cannot benefit from the new standard, and although Gen5 drives are backward, they are more expensive than their Gen4 counterparts. Just buy the fastest and highest capacity GEN4 models you can afford.
How to install SSD in your PS5
If you need guidance about installing your new NVME in your PS5 or PS5 Pro, we have a separate guide with details of all the steps here. The installation is very straightforward, but how can we help you if you are stuck? Just note: Before trying to add more storage through PS5 SSD, make sure you have the latest Sony’s software installed.
