    • Google is preparing to launch “direct updates”, which is characterized by direct iOS activities that significantly show progress -style reports.
    • Once living, these special notifications will fully expand on the lock screen and as a permanent chip in the status bar for the AT-AA-Glance Updates.
    • This feature is already fully functional in the latest Android 16 QPR1 beta, suggests that it will likely end in the next quarterly update.

Google’s stable Android 16 update, which was released last month, brought many people under hood changes, but most of its major user features are not yet alive. An important example of this is direct updates, Android’s iOS directly version of iOS. This is a special type of information designed to appear significantly on the status bar and lock screen. Although stable Android 16 release apps increase preliminary support by allowing these notifications to create these notifications, the OS does not yet treat them differently than standard. However, full support for the direct updates feature is exactly around the corner, as it is already active in the beta release and can reach the next quarterly update.

Android 16’s stable release provides direct updates by introducing a new “Progress Style” notification template. This template developers facilitates the process of adding growth rods to their app reports. Although this is not a completely new functionality, because apps like Uber already use customs built -in progress bars, the new template means that developers do not need to build them from the beginning.

Currently, Android 16 treats these progress style reports like someone else. However, the feature of direct updates will raise them. Once activated, the progress style notifications will always extend the display and the lock screen, which will eliminate the need to awaken the screen or pull the notification shade down. In addition, apps supporting direct updates can put short messages to the always visible status bar. Taping this chip will reveal a complete notification of development, with a sharp look at your workflow without interrupting your workflow.

An example of AOD (left), lock screen (left middle), status bar (right middle), and heads -up notification (right) an example of updates directly from the Uber Eat app.

Although Google has confirmed that full support for updates will be received on Pixel phones later this year, the company has never explained when. When the first Android 16 Qpr1 beta ended, this feature was disabled, because neither our test app nor Android 16 Easter eggs stimulated the full experience. The reason for this, it turns out that Google changed the requirements of promoting a notification directly in the update.

Earlier, I had shown that notifications needed to meet three criteria to qualify as a direct update: they had to use a new style of development new template, marked as continuing, and a brief summary for the status bar chip. In their place, a notification will become a direct update, assuming that the feature has been enabled in the OS.

Direct updates feature is disabled as default in stable Android 16 releases but is active in QPR1 beta. However, it should now meet the extra standards, to promote a notification in the beta. The two major changes are that the app must announce the permission of new post_proomoted_ notification and call the application Promotadong API. Although there are other minor needs, these two additions are key changes from the stable release of Android 16.

By using the Google Sample app on the Android 16 Qpr1 Beta 2, which operates my Pixel 9 Pro, I was able to get full experience directly to the latest experience. This feature is expected exactly the same, in which the notification appears fully expanded on the lock screen and a chip in the status bar.

Even it looks great in the forever display. The notification is presented as a clear outline, which helps him stand against the wallpaper.

It is also straightforward to manage direct updates. You can suppress and grab a notification and tap on “close”, or you can disable this feature from the app’s main notification settings page.

Given that direct updating in Android 16 QPR1 beta is fully active, the formal announcement by Google is not far away. Developers need to know that the feature is straight so they will be able to increase support for it, so Google waits for a long time to declare it, long -time users will have to wait to end their favorite apps.
