Google has introduced a new way to manage smart home access in the latest update of the Google Home app. With version 3.33, a new member is now available, which gives users more control of what can be done in their smart home.
Earlier, when you invited someone to your Google Home, they were provided with access to admin as default. This meant that they could make major changes, such as adding or removing the devices, connecting subscriptions, and even deleting the entire home. For many families, it was more control over the necessary – especially for guests, roommates, or children.
Now, you can choose between access to the admin and the member. Admins still have full control of the house. But if you choose the role of a new member, you can make it exactly what the person can do. Members can use devices such as lights, music speakers, smart locks, and thermostis, but you decide whether they can go more.
There are two permission toggle that you can enable members of the members. The first is for access to the “Settings”, which allows them to manufacture the device and manage home features such as automation or nest Wi -Fi. The second is for access to “activity”, which allows them to see the date from cameras, locks and presence sensors. If no option is active, members still get basic control of the equipment but they will not be able to make changes or will not be able to see the login.

This update also allows children under the age of 13 to use the Google Home app for the first time. As long as they are part of your Google Family Group, they can now be included as members. This gives them the ability to work like lights on or unlock the door after school, all of which without access to sensitive settings or history.
Both Admins and members can use the features associated with their personal Google accounts, such as voice matches and shared media services. However, only administrators can manage other users, link subscriptions, or change high levels of settings.
The role of the member was actually published in December 2024 in a public preview. With its full rollout, it is now available for everyone using the latest version of the Google Home app.
This change may seem small, but it has identified a long -standing problem with smart home sharing: how to give people access without giving them more power. Whether you are having a domestic manner with children, roommates, or frequent visitors, the new member character offers a flexible and safe way to share his equipment without losing control.
