We have all got a title that comes in the moment of our heart race – where you suddenly go into debate, just waiting for someone to say the wrong thing so that you can take off your whole sentiment. Well, I have found some of them, honestly, but one of them is definitely the environment.
Now, don’t worry, I’m not going to stick to myself on a highway or throw a soup in a famous painting. My love for the planet is a bit more … every day. These little movements, habits and yes, even I think about tech and stability.
That is why when I heard that I was not planning to support its upcoming phone (3) with up to 7 years of age, I was honestly excited. This is a big move. And the way I see it, more brands, the better industry – and maybe even the planet – can be seen in a few years.
7 years of software support are enough and it is in fact important
So, why do I say this? Well, for starting, does not change his phone every year or two years every year. Many people hang with them as long as possible. Take me, for example – I’m still shaking my iPhone 13. It is still getting the latest iOS information and as long as it continues, I have found zero reason to leave. But it’s not just about people who keep on the phone for a long time. When we talk about the environment, we need to talk about circularity – basically, keeping devices for long -term use to reduce emission from things like manufacturing and supply chain.
This is the thing that is known as the Scop 3 emission, and for smartphones, only in manufacturing is part of 70 to 90 % of their total life cycle emission. So yes, making a phone is not good for long – it’s a great deal for the planet.
The global survey of more than 13,000 mobile users in 32 countries has revealed that people actually care about this. About 90 90 % said they want phones that have sustainable, easy to repair and cooperate with software and security updates for a long time. Shakar, okay? It turns out, we are not just chasing the next shiny thing.

And its number supports: upgrade cycles are decreasing, which is now about 3.5 3.5 years globally. Between 2021 and 2023, the new phone sales declined by 15 %, while sales of used and renewed phones rose by 8 %. About half of the survey’s HALF users said they would consider a renewed phone the next time – and the biggest reason? No, not the planet! But I am sure you have guessed: Saving money.
This is why long software support is becoming more important than ever. When you are playing with your shiny new iPhone or Galaxy Phone, someone else wants to lift it and give it a second life. You get some cash back, they get a new phone (at least new for them) and the planet gets a break. Win-win
That is why I would love to see more brands in it. And I’m looking at you especially, the motorla. You have some beautiful phones-such as Razr Ultra (2025) with advanced sunglasses-but where is the long-term support he deserves? Come on, motto. Help us here.
He said, I think the pressure is working. Sooner or later, they will all come around. Because these are not just more demanding users – regulators are also starting to emphasize green, more sustainable ways. And when this pressure increases from all sides, change is not just possible – it is an indispensable (now, imagine the prayers here).
But is it always better?
Ok… not at all. Just throwing long software support policies does not automatically improve a phone – or more useful in the long run, as President Kinder Liu once suggested. The fact is, it’s not just about getting the update. It is also about whether your phone can in fact run these refreshments without any sense as it is begging for mercy.
This is why long -time help is mostly understandable for flagships. You know, the phones and tablets that are designed to keep up and still feel powerful below the line for a few years. They do not lose the price so fast and remain relevant for longer in terms of hardware.
Although we do not have the latest statistics for the best -selling phones this year or last year, a quick look at a quick look at 2022 showed: iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 8, Galaxy S9 Plus, iPhone 12 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy 20 Ultra, Galaxy 21 Altra?

Yes – each of them is the flagship. And believe me, since then matters have not changed much. Renewed high -end phones are a theft. I mean, you can now catch the Galaxy S33 Ultra on Amazon for about $ 479 – and it’s still a phone animal.
And if you want something new, from the last year, the Galaxy S24 ultra goes to about $ 8 688 and it is expected to update it by 2031. It is probably up to 21 Android. Not too much for a “used” phone? But then, this logic works for flagship phones. I really don’t see a budget phone like the Galaxy A06 that needs seven years of updates. No. That was not built to matter that longware-wise or otherwise.
World of flagship phone?

So yes, long software support means renewed phones are to shine seriously-and it’s not just good for the planet, which also means that in the distant future, we are all roaming with the flagship in our pockets.
Think about it. Since prices fall every year when a new model comes out and updates are still roaming, even lifting 3- or 4-year-old flagship can be a smart move than going a completely cheap phone, which will remain relevant for only two years.
And this shift will only be stronger as new rules begin. The European Union is already pressing phone makers to bring back some old school sensitivity: phones that are easy to repair, batteries (yes, really) and parts that are not replaced.
This pressure has already made the difference. Apple’s iPhone is the most repaired iPhone in 16 ages-and thanks to this push, even talks that Apple will bring back the user’s capable batteries by 2027. This is a big deal.
Samsung is also moving. When he announced a 7 -year OS updates for the Galaxy S24, it also extended its Samsung Care Self -Repair Program to cover more models and more components, which gives consumers more freedom to fix things themselves.
Now, of course – some people will say that these long update promises are just PR flip. And to be fair, they are of a kind. But that does not mean that they do not matter. If these tricks help the industry move in the green direction and continue our planet a little more, I say let companies become flexible. As long as the final result is better for all of us, I’m present for it.
