Last week in the WWDC 2025, Apple announced a ton of new features in the iPhone, Mac and iPad at the end of the year. But as a former fitness editor, I was most interested in what was happening to Apple Watch.
When the watch on 26 land in 26 autumn, Apple’s best watches will get liquid glass refresh (no, it is not a new type of screen, but a propaganda design language), an easy control center for instant access to settings and some new customization features.
But the main event of Apple’s Smart Watch projects is the New AI -backed exercise friend. In the newsroom post, announcing all these features, Apple has suggested that it will give you a ‘personal pus talk’: “How to get out for your race this Wednesday morning. You are 18 minutes away from closing the ring of exercise. So far, this week, you are up to 6 miles today.”
You can like
Is this sound helpful? Not for me, anyway. I am not sure that I need to pay several hundred dollars for a device that tells me things I already know. Don’t think of me wrong; I think Apple Watch is the best smart watch right now (it’s just a shame that it doesn’t work on Android).
I recommend that someone get a lot from anyone with the iPhone, unless you need to pay more attention to intense training (in this case, a Garman watch will perform you well), there is nothing better than that. But the exercise looks like a friend like ORA’s similarly unmanned AI advisor – another tool that I just neglect.
This is not the concept I dislike – I think your specific data -based viable insights can be really useful – but the implementation of these features feels like something thinking. For example, the example of Apple gives an example for a work friend as it is reading the number on you, really not understanding them.

And from the WWDBC Demo, it seems that only some additional words that are present in other fitness watches are present in these features, such as your run’s audio summary or updates when you have targeted a certain distance.
So, this is what you can already get but with ‘added AI’ – so you find friendly phrases such as, “You’re crushing it.”
It is a similar criticism that aims to summarize Strava’s athlete intelligence workout, which tells you the extent to which you run away and when with some other matrix that lived on the screen at the end of the session, but with more words.

In cleanliness, this is probably not an Apple problem, but the way technology leads to many goals or target goals to eliminate exercise. I go for a walk every morning, but I don’t care if I took a certain amount of steps – for me, the advantage is to spend some time out of mind. But how can an app on the Smart Watch understand it?
And this is disconnected. The intelligence part of all these AI features is not yet, at least, not yet.
Your Apple Watch does not know why you chose to go for a run, make yoga sessions or walk. Strava doesn’t know if you are not performing your best so you have to run slowly, and your and your ring 4 do not know that it was the noise of a aircraft that woke up quickly while affecting your sleep.
All these apps can see that there is some worth of quantity, easily read by a sensor and changes to a large number of yourself to measure yourself. But exercise, sleep and metal fitness cannot be explained only by numbers. And as long as the features of exercise friends and other AI really do not understand it, I will leave them firmly in off -position.
