Apple’s WBC 2025 Key note had a lot of dhoomy about its new “liquid glass” interface for iOS 26, iPads, Max and Apple TV, but there was much less ahead of me. In fact, it felt as if Apple’s worst events I had covered as a CNET journalist in my 14 years. This is not a good sign. What I can say with confidence is that Apple needs to have a really big splash with iPhone 17 when it starts in September.
It was not that Apple did something wrong in its announcements. I really liked most of them. The language of the new liquid glass design is allegedly in the same vein with Windows Vista, but it was nice to see the iOS a little refreshing, as it has just felt a little bit for a while. But, it is hardly grounded, nor will it change how we interact with our phones.
Thanks for making my app’s icons transparent, Apple, but what can I do with them now?
Some of some of the new features announced by the company – such as call screening tools or screenshot search function that uses Apple’s visual intelligence – looks good, but they are mainly alike for finding Android’s call screening tools and circles, so it is difficult to be passionate. Dutto is now coming to TVOS and iPados for the shining icons. Even Apple’s software engineering senior VP Craig Federgie knew that he had nothing to scream: “A point pointer? Who would have thought!” He said.
Well, I like Windows in iPados. But it is one of the only things that impressed my interest in the entire presentation. When I talked about the new Games app, I sat down with the hope, Thumbs was already wandering with enthusiasm about new titles that I could thank the new platforms or new progress in the Apple metal graphics engine. But no, it’s an easy way to watch your game and see your friend’s high score. Big deal
Galaxy S25 Edge against a piece of thin crust pizza. Your move, apple.
I leave a sense of being a bit extinct due to lack of enthusiasm as a whole, so I was forced to look at September instead, when we expect the iPhone 17 unveiled. It needs to be a big one. This requires some real magical cycle. And not only for me, but also for Apple.
The iPhone 16 is a great phone, but its biggest new feature was a new button for the camera that still feels a bit… strange. Last year, Apple Intelligence’s tremendous unveiled, which has been a huge task so far, Federgie said that more information about Apple intelligence updates will be shared “in the coming year”. In short, it feels like Apple needs a win.
See this: I am impressed with iOS 26. Apple just improved iPhones

IPhone 17 That can win. Early rumors identified upgraded cameras with advanced video features for creators, as well as a thin iPhone air possibility that will compete with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. Will this be the year we will see a foldable iPhone? Almost certainly not certainly, but it will definitely be a bit more interesting to hear during a long key note.
Maybe I’m very strict, and I am a bit shocking after 14 years of covering Apple’s events. Maybe I am bad because its key note started at 6pm in my UK time zone, effectively pushing my meal behind and I have to wait for me to eat. Or may Apple need to put a little more meat on the plate and prove that its biggest announcements of the year are not more styles than just substances.
